I do not understand the 5-star reviews for this book. Gayle writes well -- nothing wrong there. But the story of their life in France reads like a diary. There is a lot of solid text, reeling off how things happened for them. The sparkle I was looking for is missing, despite the author's sense of humour which is well in evidence. What is missing is the conversations, the characters they meet, the happenings and pitfalls. So, large parts of the story bored me and found myself skipping large bits. I assume they really did and do have a fairly untroubled life in France, but I kept reading to find the inevitable stumbles which happen to people in a foreign country. But nothing ... all is well and it all ends well.
Gayle Smith Padgett and her husband Ralph follow their dream and move to Provence. After the inevitable stumbles, they settle down in the charming town of St-Rémy-de-Provence, a place I call home part of the year. Author Padgett does an excellent job of capturing the sights and sounds of this lovely town and even more importantly the “feel†of the place. And I loved her descriptions of dealing with the French bureaucracy and their addiction to paperwork! Bravo to Gayle and Ralph for building a new life in this wonderful country.
This book follows the story of an American couple that worked in Germany but loved France, and after retirement around 2010 moved to Provence. It differs from many ex-pat stories in that they were, and as far as I can tell from the book, remain renters instead of buyers. So it is a different approach than the struggles-with-remodeling story in so many book. The author has a wonderful touch in describing scenes out of their life such as a special meal, a hike, a short trip out of town. The only quibble I have about the book is the title: it shows up on Amazon as "Passion for Provence: 22 Keys to La Belle Vie" and while there is indeed a sentence at the end of each chapter with a maxim they almost seem beside the point while the title seems to imply the book is more akin to an instruction book than a memoir.
If you've ever wondered what it's like to relocate to a different country (specifically France) or need a quick respite from daily life, do yourself a favor and read this book. I have a strange fascination for books that describe what it’s like to live the expat life in France. Having done it myself, I find each story shares a different view on the experience of settling into a different culture. In this book, the author strikes an upbeat tone even amongst the numerous challenges they faced as she delightfully recounts the sojourn that landed she and her husband in Saint Remy de Provence. Her descriptions of life in France are right on. Highly recommended for arm-chair travelers and those searching for new vistas.
In this period when living in America is one anxiety after another, it is comforting to read about an adventurous couple enjoying a stress free life in beautiful Provence. The keys to happiness at the end of each chapter is clever and entertaining. Wish I could move to Provence and enjoy the food and wine Gayle writes about.
if you are a fan of Peter Mayle's delightful "A Year in Provence," or even just somebody who fantasizes about following your dreams to Provence, then you will enjoy Gayle Smith Padgett's "Passion for Provence." This charming memoir tells how she and her husband Ralph fulfilled their dream of retiring in France. You'll commiserate with their struggles with the language and the bureaucracy - and cheer as they settle into their new life. The book is not only a great "how to," but also an inspiring "Why not?" Prop up your feet, have a glass of wine and enjoy "Passion for Provence."
There are some slow points in her adventures but most of her stories satisfied my need for vicarious adventures in Provence.
This is a great read, but don’t let the title fool you – this is really a book about keys to living a happy life for which the author just happens to use her experiences relocating to Provence as the backdrop. If you are interested in living in Provence then this book is a must read. However, even if you don't have a passion for Provence but do have an interest in living well wherever you hang your hat, and could use a few smiles along the way, then read on…
