#24,977 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

The book is fine as far as it goes. But I wish I had realized when I bought it that it was just the original large format comics reduced down to a tiny page size. Makes it hard to read and less engaging. went out and bought the original size ones.

The books themselves are classics, but in these reproductions, the entire page is 5x7 inches. As other reviewers have pointed out, they are far too small to comfortably read or to enjoy the illustrations. I returned them.

Having read volume 2 of this collection I can honestly say that Herge took some time to find his feet with the series. The first two Tintin books, Tintin in the Land of the Soviets and Tintin in the Congo, were so racially and culturally insensitive that they have rarely been reprinted and aren't even included in this collection. The first story in this volume, Tintin in America, isn't quite that bad, but it is still on the tail of the same trend. It's a boring, repetitive story that's racially insensitive. The other two stories, however, mark the beginning of a turning point in the series. Cigars of the Pharaoh and The Blue Lotus are two connected stories that are deep, complex, and entertaining beyond belief. The stories in volume 2 just get better. So if you buy this and are knee-deep into Tintin in America and aren't feeling it, know that it's not representative of the series as a whole, and maybe consider just skipping to Cigars of the Pharaoh.

Long before Steven Spielberg discovered Tintin, I was reading his comic book adventures in both English and French. (In English, you pronounce his name Tin-Tin, while in French, you pronounce it Tan-Tan.) When my wife and I visited Quebec City one summer, I bought several French versions of Tintin in a local bookstore. They have given me hours of pleasure._The Adventures of Tintin_, vol. 1 (2007) is an omnibus of three early Tintin adventures: _Tintin in America_, _The Cigars of the Pharaoh_, and _The Blue Lotus_. The last two are direct sequels to one another, with _Lotus_ continuing the plot of _Pharaoh_. I believe that they have a freshness that is lacking in some of the later adventures. The setting of the stories is a bit dated. There are speakeasies and Chicago gangsters in _America_. (Al Capone makes a brief appearance.) And the Japanese are invading China and walking out of the League of Nations in _Lotus_. But I'm glad that no attempt was made to modernize them. The thirties flavor is part of their charm. These adventures take place before the entrance of the bibulous Captain Haddock and the auditorily challenged Professor Calculus. But that ever faithful dog Snowy is there, and the Chinese boy, Chang. And so are those bowler-hatted detectives, the Thom(p)son twins; though in these stories, they are more concerned with arresting Tintin for crimes that he didn't commit than with helping him. That villainous seaman Allan makes his first appearance in _Cigars_. He will make a later appearance in _The Crab with the Golden Claws_.The stories are Saturday afternoon serial adventures laced with slapstick humor. Tintin is tossed into the river, falls off of cliffs, faces firing squads, is lost at sea in a coffin, is toppled into meat grinding machinery, is caught by a snare (in a straight jacket, no less), has boulders toppled towards him, is tied up on a railroad track... and frequently escapes only by means of outrageous luck. Some readers have objected to some of these methods of escape as relying too much upon coincidence. I believe that they miss the point. The sheer outlandish nature of some of the escapes is all part of the humor. The artwork is terrific. Herge is especially good with elaborate machines: ocean liners, sailboats, roadsters, airplanes, trains, and guns. But then there are the wonderful landscapes of Arabian cities, Singapore, the Indian jungle, and the Sahara Desert. And there are also animals: horses, mountain lions, deer, tigers, and Chinese dragons. My one quibble is that the size of the book is smaller than the originals, shrinking the print and preventing the pictures from having their full effect.

As a fan of Tin Tin for many years, I was enthusiastic about getting this version to share with my 2-year-old daughter. The art is still wonderful, but I wish I had paid more attention to the dimensions of the book. It is VERY SMALL, and so is the text. I'm only in my 40s and I can barely read it! If you have a magnifying glass handy, you're in luck. I imagine it's also very good for people who are incredibly nearsighted, or those who require very small hardbound books for travel or storage purposes. Other than that, if you're looking for something you can actually read, with pictures large enough to see detail, check out other offerings. This book is beautifully made...I just can't read it.

The good news: Volume One of the Adventures of Tintin contains three early stories by Belgian cartoonist Herge about his iconic cartoon hero, the young journalist and adventurer Tintin. The bad news: the small format of these books doesn't do justice to Herge's distinctive artwork. In "Tintin in America", the crusading reporter Tintin and his faithful dog Snowy take on the Chicago. In a story laden with mob stereotypes, Tintin survives one dangerous encounter after another, finally ending up out West in pursuit of a fleeing mob boss. The two will play cowboy and indian in a thrilling finale. In "Cigars of the Pharoah", Tintin and Snowy run afoul of a drug-smuggling operation while visiting Egypt on a cruise ship. The chase takes Tintin to the desert, the Red Sea, and finally to the jungles of India for a showdown with the drug gang. This adventure is noteworthy for introducing the bumbling detectives Thompson and Thomson, and recurring villain Rastopopolus."The Blue Lotus" has Tintin and Snowy continuing their pursuit of the drug smugglers into war-torn China. Tintin takes refuge at the International Settlement in Shanghai, where he befriends the young boy Chang, and where he finds much official corruption and personal danger.Herge did extensive research in support of his carefully detailed plots, some of which are now a bit dated. Fans will often forgive the storylines for the sake of Herge's simple yet wonderfully detailed artwork, and for that, this reviewer recommends a larger format, if you can find it.

Carnegie's Maid: A Novel, by Marie Benedict

Review

"Feels like Downton Abbey in the United States...Benedict demonstrates the relevance of history to the present day in this impeccably researched novel of the early immigrant experience. Deeply human, and brimming with complex, vulnerable characters, CARNEGIE'S MAID shows the power of ambition tempered by altruism, and the true realization of the American Dream." - Erika Robuck, national bestselling author of Hemingway's Girl"In CARNEGIE'S MAID, Marie Benedict skillfully introduces us to Clara, a young woman who immigrates to American in the 1860s and unexpectedly becomes the maid to Andrew Carnegie's mother. Clara becomes close to Andrew Carnegie and helps to make him America's first philanthropist. Downton Abbey fans should flock to this charming tale of fateful turns and unexpected romance, and the often unsung role of women in history." - Pam Jenoff, New York Times bestselling author of The Orphan's Tale"With its well-drawn characters, good pacing, and excellent sense of time and place, this volume should charm lovers of historicals, romance, and the Civil War period. Neither saccharine nor overly dramatized, it's a very satisfying read. " - Library Journal"Marie Benedict has penned a sensational novel that turns the conventional Cinderella story into an all-American triumph. Young Clara Kelley steps off the boat from Ireland into Andrew Carnegie's affluent world, where invention can transform men and women into whatever they dare to dream." - Sarah McCoy, New York Times and international bestselling author of The Mapmaker's Children and The Baker's Daughter"[an] excellent historical novel." - Publishers Weekly"...engaging. The chaste romance will draw readers of inspirational fiction, while the novel is constructed to appeal to those seeking a tale with an upstairs-downstairs dynamic and all-but-invisible female characters who are either the impetus for or the actual originators of great men's great ideas. For Fans of Liz Trenow, Erika Robuck, and Nancy Horan. " - Booklist"I loved everything about this book... A little drama, a little romance, and a well-told story... Highly recommended." - Sherry Fritzsche, Bank Square Books (Mystic, CT)"A special addition to the Downton Abbey canon...an absorbing exploration of the influence one plucky young woman might have had on this pioneering philanthropist. " - Toronto Star"Fascinating story..." - Bustle

This was a wonderful book that I absolutely couldn't put down. I live in Pittsburgh and have been to all of the sites discussed in the book but, more importantly, the author wrote a seamless story intertwining history and fiction to tell the story of a fascinating man who gave so much to the world. I am now inspired to read even more about Andrew Carnegie and the history of steel making in our country and in Pittsburgh specifically.I am an avid reader of historical fiction and believe that I have learned a great deal from reading books like Carnegie's Maid and highly recommend it to others who like a little fiction mixed into well researched history.

Perhaps a very Pittsburgh book, too -- right down to foregoing love in favor of duty, and love transmuting into ideals. When I was a child in Pittsburgh, the main Carnegie Library was a temple to learning -- no expense spared in its majestic construction and every book cherished, no matter how obscure. I used to make the series of trolley journeys from my suburban home to the university district to visit it every other weekend, just because it amazed me that I was welcome in such a palatial and scholarly environment -- everyone was. It was its sheer magnificence that began my fasciation with Andrew Carnegie. I also adored Pittsburgh -- a very complex place, for those of you who don't know it.So of course I wanted to read this book, and that side of me was gratified to come away with a better understanding of the young Carnegie and Pittsburgh in the time of the Civil War -- with an intriguing description of New York in the same time period thrown in.This book is not a literary masterpiece, but it is competently written from the POV of a ladies' maid -- a narrow view of the world, but one which serves the purposes of the book very nicely. The characters took on reality for me, and the small domestic view of some of the great robber-baron moves of the day, and of the building of the country's infrastructure, was engrossing. So was the description of the living conditions of laboring-class immigrants and Irish tenant farmers during the time of the great potato famine, which came to vivid life. And the story arc was quite satisfying -- and the farthest thing imaginable from predictable. I'll be re-reading this book in future.

The whole book seems contrived to show that a (fictional) young woman made Carnegie a great philanthropist, although he'd already decided to be one at a young age. It's also a bit boring.I realize that being a servant in the 19th century was miserable work, but how many times must we read that Clara brushes Mrs. Carnegie's hair 200 strokes at night and rubs in rosewater lotion and buffs her nails? Darns her silk stockings? A servant's work was certainly repetitious, but the writing doesn't need to be. I felt as though the author just copy-pasted those passages in as filler.Similarly, all the details that Clara instantly grasped about the insider trading and M&A activity among robber barons was too technical for my entertainment. One of Clara's big victories in the books is when she suggests to Carnegie that he sue for patent violation. A modern female lawyer (such as the author) might think of that. There's no way a simple Irish girl would have heard of it - I don't care how many poetry books her father somehow found for her to read. That's the lawyer talking, not the Irish maid.I did leave wanting to read a good, non-fictional bio of Carnegie. His life story must be fascinating. Why did he live with his mother until his 50s and only marry after her death? Very Freudian!P.S. For Downton Abbey fans (every review seems to mention DA), please remember that DA begins when the Titanic sinks in 1912. Carnegie was already elderly when the Titanic sank. This is about a very different era.

Too much romance for my taste, but the historical portion was pretty good!! I couldn’t put it down. Without all the romance, I would’ve given it a 5 star. Andrew Carnegie was a complex individual with his business acumen, philanthropy, and (very interestingly) his late in life marriage to a very young bride. The description of Pittsburg was quite fascinating.

This is a nice story about how Andrew Carnegie changed from a “cut throat” businessman building his fortune, to one of the greatest philanthropists in history. It’s an interesting story that moves quickly. I enjoyed it.

Review

''Bryon MacWilliams's telling of Laura Oberlender's story of surviving the Holocaust by literally 'living' in a haystack for over a year rivals the Anne Frank's in its multiple levels of heroism. His prose honors Laura's story by being as suspenseful as it is lucid and lyrical. It's a story of endurance and, finally, of beauty.''--Stephen Dunn, winner of the Pulitzer Prize in Poetry ''A moving and original account based on real events that distills in a few pages the horror of local mass murder and the extraordinary kindness of others during the Holocaust.'' --Omer Bartov, Brown University, author of Anatomy of a Genocide ''This short, very moving, historically accurate account portrays the strength of will to survive under the most adverse conditions imaginable. It is a sobering reminder of the capacity of evil in the behavior of many -- which sometimes is met by the goodness, and great humanitarian spirit, of the few.'' --Mordecai Paldiel, former Director of the Department of the Righteous, Yad Vashem ''The Girl in the Haystack is written from the perspective of a child who sees things that no child should see and is under the threat of annihilation that no child should experience. It is a work of brevity and intensity that conveys the anguish of the situation and the courage of a child who endures so much and expects so little. Riveting and painful.'' --Michael Berenbaum, director of the Sigi Ziering Institute, American Jewish University ''A riveting, true story that will help young readers understand the realities of the Holocaust, and how one child and her parents survived it.'' --Andrea Warren, author of Surviving Hitler: A Boy in the Nazi Death Camps ''[Laura's] will to survive hunger, vermin, silence and terror is a testament to courage and hope. Powerful stories like hers must be told again and again and again so we will never forget.'' --Jennifer Elvgren, author of The Whispering Town
