The book was well written and engaging. This is my first read for this author. I look forward to reading more from her. I was really surprised that there weren’t any noticeable Oz colloquialisms. Maybe I skipped over it? Or she’s just amazing like that?Kit is a strong woman who has been thrown some pretty rough curve balls but continues to soldier on. She’s strong and independent and doing the best she can to keep her family together. Help comes in the form of UFC Champ Bobby and together, they build a stronger family, filled with friends and siblings. As the song says, blood is thicker than water, but love is thicker than blood.I do have some concerns though....***spoiler alerts***How did Kit leave home at 16, move back home at 17 and still miraculously finish high school, and buy a house by 19? And yet her dad, who has worked all his life, couldn’t afford to buy a house by the age of 47? Plus she attended college, and is a successful accountant by 25? The description of her work is inconsistent for an “accountant”.As for Bobby, I looked up UFC fighting salaries and there’s no way he could have made $80 million in 3 championship fights. Rhonda Rousey doesn’t even make that much. Unless that was meant to be $8 million? That’s believable.Overall, I would recommend the book and just gloss over those little details I think are questionable.

I really enjoyed this story! There's a good combination of heart, humor, suspense, and steamy sex!Kit has just lost her father to cancer, and she has inherited his debt and her 15 year old brother, Jack. Bobby is a UFC fighter with a large, loving family. Kit and Jack both start training at Bobby's gym, and while Kit finds her confidence again, Jack finds the discipline and routine the unruly teen needs. There's an emphasis on family in this book, which I found really enjoyable, as well. I look forward to the rest of the series.

Finding Home (Book 1 of the Rollin’ On Series) by Emilia Finn is the story that really pulled me out of a deep funk. At the heart of this story is Kit Reilly, she has really been through the ringer with all the lemons that life has thrown her. Seriously though, Kit is a tough lady. She is raising her little brother when she meets Bobby Kincaid in a chance meeting. From there it’s game on.Emilia Finn has created a cast of characters that you will love from the first moment they appear on the page. They are so relatable and you just want to be friends with them all. The plot and sub-plots of the story are amazing and well put together.I will definitely recommend this story to others. I give it 5 out of 5 Platypires.

Finding Home is a beautifully strong and emotional read about family and love. A story about a strong woman that doesn't need to be rescued and an equally strong partner to back her up. It is full of trust, betrayal, trials, love, suspense and heartbreak. The characters are so well developed that I felt as if I was a part of their family, that I was there experiencing their every emotion. There are a few grammatical errors but nothing major and little to no inconsistencies through out the story. I loved every single word in this book. It sucked me in so completely, I didn't want it to end. I cannot wait to read book 2 just to see where Emilia is going to take this powerhouse couple next. I will definitely be looking forward to future books from Emilia Finn!

For her debut novel, Emilia kills it. This book left me on a high, wanting and needing more. I felt so much for these characters.Bobby is amazing. A strong, sexy fighter that knows what he wants and does what it takes to make it his. You’ll only fall more in love with him when you realize that he’s at his fiercest when he’s protecting those he loves.Kit is every woman. The way Emilia writes Kit is so honest and real, it’s like she’s taking your hopes, fears and dreams and putting them into this book. You will love her. You will cheer her on. And by the end of this book, you’ll want to be her.I’ll not ever tire of this book. It’s one I return to over and over again. The Kincaid family and the Rollin On crew have me hooked.

This was awesome! I can't believe this is the first book by the author. After reading this I thought I will read all her other books but found that this was her first. I am totally going to read the others in the series and any other books by her. The story, the writing, the characters everything is so amazing. You just fall in love with the characters as you read. Not the best if you like heroines who can't hold their own. Because Kit is definitely not your regular heroine. And Bobby totally manages to be worthy of her.Starting with the second book right away!!!!

I am completely in love with this series! Emilia really pulls you into the story and makes you wish the characters were real people you could meet. I love the fact that Kit is a strong, independent woman who really steps up when she is left raising her teenage brother. Bobby is a tough guy but has no problem telling her and showing her how he feels - it just makes you love him even more!!

I liked Kit and Bobby and all the rest of the meatheads at the gym. But the pacing and structure of the book is all wrong I seriously thought it was over at 49% and it was essentially. The three weeks felt like three weeks, and the danger was over in a second. It just kept going even though there were plenty of places where the never ending story could have been put out of its misery.

#350,869 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

Just received this book. Ordered because I have Macular Degeneration in both eyes. I've lost the central vision in the right one and the left one is getting worse. I cannot read anything with the right eye. Since this book is about blindness why would it not be printed in large print so we can read it???? As far as the content I will review later as I struggle to read it with one eye.

As a victim of macular degeneration and a retired nurse always interested in health education, I have to buy a new book when it comes out. Doctor Anshel gives some of the basics but tends to focus on lifestyle and diet changes---most recommended for all healthy living. He discusses dietary supplements and their value. He ends the book with how to live with the disease and that is an important factor. That said, I would recommend the book "Vision Loss-Strategies for Living with Hope and Independence" by Peggy Wolfe, edition 3 on adapting to a life with vision loss.

A very complete, helpful, and up-to-date book for people who have symptoms of macular degeneration.

very good information. simple to read and understand.

The authors present a comprehensive guide to age-related macular degeneration, beginning with scientific and technical explanations and progressing to practical nutritional advice along with diet and lifetyle changes that can help to prevent or delay vision loss due to age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD). Anti-AMD Diet Suggestions are included, as is an excellent resources section for finding support groups and the latest technological aids if AMD is already affecting your life. This guide is an important reminder not to take the health of your vision for granted -- the earlier you implement the suggestions outlined here, the more dramatically you can lower your risk of being robbed of your sight in your senior years.

Author Jeffrey Anshel, OD received his training in visual science and Optometry fom the Illinois College of Optometry and lectures and writes extensively about nutrition and eye health. Author Laura Stevens received her degrees in Nutrition Science from the Department of Nutrition at Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana and has also written books about diet, behavior and allergies in addition to continuing her research on the relationship between diet and health. Of note, Laura has been diagnosed with AMD.With this extensive coupled background it is apparent that these two learned scientists have found a significant connection between diet and Age-Related Macular Degeneration – the subject of this fine and accessible book.As their explanation for the content states, ‘Age-related macular degeneration – AMD - is the most commonly diagnosed eye disorder in people over fifty. Well over two million Americans have been told they have AMD, and that number is expected to grow substantially. While this is a frightening statistic, over the last several years, medical researchers have shown that a number of effective treatments can slow, stop, and even reverse the progress of AMD. The book is divided into four parts. Part One explains how the eye works and how AMD develops, in both its wet and its dry forms. It then looks at the most common risk factors and explains how each of these factors negatively affects the structures of the eye. In Part Two, the authors look at the specific nutrients that affect the various cells of the eye. Included is a discussion of AREDS―the National Eye Institute’s study that showed which supplements help protect the eye from disease. Part Three offers an additional weapon against AMD. It explains why diet matters and offers advice on selecting foods that promote eye health while eliminating those that do the most damage. Part Four provides practical suggestions and easy-to-follow tips on how to incorporate this valuable information into your life. If AMD runs in your family or you have been diagnosed with this potentially life-altering condition, it is important to know that there is not only hope, but a real path to a better, healthier life.’This is a powerfully poignant review of eye anatomy and physiology presented in a manner that the lay public can understand. The dietary/nutritional treatments are swell defined – especially the two variations of AREDS (Age-Related Eye Disease Study) – the use of Beta-carotene, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Zinc, Copper +/- lutein and Zeaxanthin. It is refreshing to have such a solid source of well organized and documented information about our eyes – those parts of our body that are even more abused with the wide uses of IT and computer use. Read the book, pay attention to the signs, and follow the diets, This is a very important book for all to read. Grady Harp, May 18I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.

Review

In The Washington Post, Jill Filipovic believes that Tainted Witness"is a timely and necessary defense of the women whose voices are so often drowned out or shouted down":"Tainted Witness" arrives at the right time, at the front end of a rapidly building anti-feminist backlash. The ease with which so many Americans disregard or disbelieve women's testimony was on clear display in November, when millions voted for Trump despite the accusations against him and his own claim, caught on video, that he had sexually assaulted women. This book provides a crucial feminist critique of the impossible and ever-shifting standards to which women who offer life testimony are held, along with guidance on how to navigate a path forward....These are crucial observations and excellent rebuttals to the faux legalism that so often dominates the public discourse around high-profile sexual assault cases. We are entering an era when malevolent sexism and entrenched mistrust in women are not only tacitly approved but actively modeled by the man in the Oval Office, and when many of our most valued institutions and even the very concept of truth are under fire. Not in recent memory have the ideas Gilmore elucidates been so necessary, which is why I wish her work was more accessible to a wider audience. Still, this is a sharp work of feminist scholarship, unflinching in its insistence that women's testimony about our own lives is a potent and often threatening force undercut by those who accurately assess its power. In a country soon to be led by a very loud man who ran a campaign of aggrieved masculinity, "Tainted Witness" is a timely and necessary defense of the women whose voices are so often drowned out or shouted down.In the Times Higher Education, Laura Frost gave an excellent close look at Tainted Witness, which was named the THE Book of the Week: The tautological observation that women are thought to be untrustworthy because they are women invites speculation about its genesis. While a definitive answer lies outside the scope of Tainted Witness, Gilmore is especially astute when she shows how "bodies and story move in a choreography of testimony". For example: "The instant Anita Hill saw a barrage of flashbulbs erupt the first time she altered position in her seat, she knew that in photographs of her testimony, her body could be made to tell a story that would compromise her." These and other somatic moments in Tainted Witness show how profoundly female embodiment influences the reception of women's words. If harassment and assault are a means of denigrating women's power, might the charge of fabrication - in the sense of deceit - conceal an anxiety about fabrication in the sense of making or creating, and perhaps the most fundamental power of reproduction? Now that America has elected as its president a man who denigrates women and their bodies, who thinks women who exercise their reproductive rights should be "punished" and who spouts xenophobic and racist views, Gilmore's insights are more pressing than ever. Tainted Witness is an important and timely book. If ever we needed evidence that the work of feminism is not yet done, this is it.In the Boston Globe, Katie Tuttle quotes Leigh Gilmore on the timeliness of Tainted Witness:"My hope in the book," she said, "is if we can become familiar with these patterns for undermining women's testimony, and undermining women's credibility, then I think we can begin to anticipate where and how these attacks will take place and maybe we can try to stay a step ahead of them."As we face the results of an election that included examples of this dynamic (Hillary Clinton, Gilmore said, "has been a tainted witness for almost her entire career"), we stand at a moment of possible change. "On one hand, this seems like the era of welcome for women's testimony. We seem to be hearing more stories from more places around the world from women," she said. "But at the same time, the mechanisms for tainting women's witness are swifter and more effective than ever."

#509,605 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I picked up Tainted Witness to help me understand the 2016 elections after reading a piece by the author in The Conversation about Hillary Clinton. The first chapter on Anita Hill brought back a lot of memories and offered a new entry point for thinking about how women’s life stories (whether in memoir or legal testimony, etc) are used and misused. Glad to see an academic book take on an issue so important to feminism today.

Tainted Witness gives important context for and insight into what is happening right now as more women come forward with accounts of harassment and assault. Gilmore’s writing is clear and thoughtful.

if you want to understand the Kavanaugh hearings, read this account that was written before them! which is to say, this is a theory that applies brilliantly to current events

A current and insightful view into the barriers to believing women who come forward with revelations about their lives.

I’m sure she has some meaningful insights in here but the writing is so dense. I feel like it was written to be read dramatically from a pulpit. Don’t understand the point of creating such a laborious read. Would clear and concise be too lowbrow?

It had a lot of good information but was hard to follow. The theme was not emphasized enough in the conclusion.

This book represents a witness in itself, witness to the subjugation of women's voices, their value as objective, intelligent humans. It covers complex relationships, which require observation and introspection for a full understanding and appreciation of its nuances. It's tough to face the truths in this text--to consider, intellectually, how our culture has devalued women's voices, everywhere from inside the bedroom, and inside a clinic, to the possibility of inside the oval office. The tribalism I witnessed in men, against a possible female president in the 2016 election, opened my eyes to the need for our voices to be louder and stronger, and this book helps correlate those images with other historic and ordinary events. It is time for women to rise up again, against a machine operated by systemic misogyny, often perpetrated by men--and women--who lack self awareness of their own contribution to the problem.

Leigh Gilmore's work here is lucid, astute, and essential to a larger understanding of how the life experiences of women are so often dismissed and demeaned, and how we might resist. The writing is, as always, fresh, inviting, and deeply thought provoking.
