This is a sad moment. I can't sugar coat it.This volume is for the most part a picture book filled with illustrations and photographs, many which I had never seen (which is saying something, as I am well studied in 2001: a space odyssey). BRILLIANT research and lovely photos. This review will focus on this aspect of the book. The book comes in a rather astounding format... and as 6.9x15x1.6... clearly meant to resemble the monolith and its famous 1:4:9 ratio. And I thought, "Brilliant... artful and will allow the wide Cinemascope imagery (at 2.21:1 or 2.35:1)... requiring that the book be held wide left to right to resemble a cinema screen. In a decision that will go down in book history as unfathomably stupid, the book is instead "broken" and hinged sitting tall. It feels much like reading a double tall version of a newspaper. This format is fine for reading the accompanying text.In what will go down as one of the most horrific decisions in book making history... these amazing and rare photos and illustrations are force fit into pages that have a useable space of about 6 inches wide, and 14 inches tall. This makes presentation of these glorious visuals an impossible task... either the images have to be shrunk to postcard size... or, and this is almost criminal... the image must be split, down the center, across the book spline. OH. MY. GOD. The CENTER of these amazing images... hopelessly lost in the curving folds between adjacent pages. (see accompanying photos to this review). These images might have been a gold mine for scale model references... or just appreciated for their historical value or beauty... but are now marred by being split in two.In an apparent effort to deal with this madness, there are many fold out pages, but even these have a crease, and the printing ink on my copy was not happy to remain on the paper at these folds... leaving a white line at the crease. Given we are dealing with a visual film of space, white lines cutting vertically through black are somewhat noticeable! To top it off, the paper seems to be of questionable quality. Generally, coffee table books like these are on heavy high gloss paper, but this paper is decidedly dull and brings a lifeless quality to the images.I wish I had better news about this book. If you can stand to have your heart crushed by how these astounding and rare images are defiled, then I suppose you might consider adding this title to your library. This book screams loudly for another edition... reformatted, in an orientation and aspect fitting to the heart of the work: the visual material.

It seems that someone is setting up multiple "names" so they can file reviews once a month with 5 stars, titled "Five Stars" each time. At least I assume so; they're identical, and fall in a narrow time window. Without them this book would have a far lower rating. I bought it without doing my usual reading of reviews, so I guess it's my fault that I was so severely disappointed in the book, but everything that's been said about its ridiculous formatting and infuriating placement of images across pages rather than rotating to fit a single page is true. My specific goal was to find the unique info on the Pan Am Orion clipper that I'd been told was here, but those photos were split across pages so there's nothing useful I can gain without cutting the spine off the book, extracting the pages I need, and doing a hi-res scan so I can digitally put the two halves together. To those questioning whether other reviewers have been too unkind, and who instead want to focus on the richness of the material, consider this: Fold-outs are used to accommodate minor characters' headshots in good order, but Dr Heywood Floyd's is split across pages, so the middle of his face disappears down the crease. And similar things abound throughout the book. What a severe disappointment after I'd been so excited by the promised content! And I see no way to return the book; it's not "defective" or "damaged" or any of the other categories Amazon gives you to justify sending it back, it's just a bad product. No matter how good the content itself may be, it's presented so poorly as to be useless for the purposes for which I ordered it.

First, I am one of the people fortunate enough to have seen the film during its initial release (although not in one of the “Road Shows”) and have been a constant fan, watching it almost annually ever since, and re-reading the novel at least six or seven times. I’ve also read many books and articles on 2001, so I’m well extremely familiar with the subject. I’m always game for anything new dealing with it, so I decided to buy this book, despite some of the negative reviews. While I’m still glad I bought it, I have to say I’m in total agreement with those who have expressed negative reviews regarding the physical format and quality of the book. While the ratio is meant to evoke the Monolith, it ruins the wonderful (many rare) photos inside. In a book that is about a movie whose chief impact is VISUAL, this is unforgivable. Yes, the price is low, at least when I bought it in late 2017, but I’d be willing to pay two to three times this amount for this book in a format that allows you to see the photos in their entirety. The information contained is wonderful, and is appropriate for casual and serious fans of the film and of Kubrick. There is plenty of material right from the “horses’ mouths” (both Kubrick and Clarke), although much less from Clarke, which I found a little disappointing. Plus tons of material from many others directly involved in creating the movie.Fans of film will also love this book for its trove of information on how movies are made and how creative minds work to present art and wonder to us, the viewers. So my bottom line is this: Yes, it’s worth buying, but be warned that the format will likely frustrate and/or disappoint you. My wish would be for this book to be re-printed in a regular coffee table format. If the publishers really want to use the cute Monolith in some way, then include a small “collectors item” of it in the package.

Pack Challenge opens with Sara getting drunk off her ass in celebration of her grandmother's death. The fact that the abusive woman died months ago and the whole town is still ecstatic, shows just how evil the old bat was. During Sara's revelry, she ends up sticking her tongue down a biker's throat, but before things go much further Sara is pried off the guy by her two best friends. Sara isn't really someone who gropes random men without the motivation of tequila, so when the biker shows up at her work the next day she's a bit embarrassed.Sara was an interesting character. Her leg is screwed up from when she was mauled by a mountain lion, so she spends 90 percent of the book limping around town. Turns out that the lion was actually a shifter seeking revenge against Sara's family and, with the death of her grandmother, the lion is back to trying to kill her. Bad thing is that Sara doesn't know that monsters are real and she especially doesn't know that she's a wolf shifter.I really don't care for storylines centered on the main character discovering that vampires, werewolves, etc. are real. The whole chain of denial, proving, and slowly coming to terms gets a little boring. That was my main problem with this book. I got bored with Sara slowly discovering the paranormal aspects of her world, especially since it eclipsed the whole lions are trying to kill her plot. The romance between Sara and the hero (Zach) was also dull. I liked Zach, but he wasn't the most interesting Laurenston hero I've read. Zach has a game plan and that doesn't include a meaningful relationship. His current goal is to become pack leader and sleep with a crap ton of women. So when he meets Sara he's immediately intrigued and scared shit-less by the intense attraction he has to her. He's determined to just tell her she's a wolf shifter and high-tail it out of town. But, of course, things don't go according to his plan. All in all, I'd recommend this book for fans of Shelly Laurenston, but if you're looking to get into this author I would suggest starting with Beast Behaving Badly.

This book had humor, action, & lots of sex scenes & a good vs bad vibe.Sara has always lived in this town with her BFF's when a bunch of people on motorcycles came roaring into town. That's when her boring life changed along with herself. She had actually met Zach the night before when she was drunk & called him her "pretty man" & also kissed & fondled him before her BFF's came & took her home.Zach & his pack were on a mission to bring Sara home because she's originally from Northern California as she & her parents had been part of their pack. He was also charged with looking after her to make sure that the lions didn't kill her before they could tell her that she's a shifter. Zach has been attracted to her since they 1st met & that doesn't change thru the entire book. That's all that I'm going to tell you other than this book was excellent & that I can't wait to read the next book in this series.

Please note this review may contain spoilers.Pack Challenge is Book 1 of 3 in the series and we're introduced to Zach and Sara. Both are wolf shifters, although because of her grandmother, Sara doesn't know what she is.Initially, Zach arrives in town with his Pack to protect Sara from the Pride, which is hell bent on exacting revenge for a decades old feud. A feud that saw Sara's mother killed when she was 1, and her father killed when she was 8. It was in that attack that Sara was left with facial scarring and a severe leg injury which causes her unbearable pain as the years go on. Because of her scarring, most men act like she doesn't exist. But not Zach. He takes one look at her and sees the amazing (yet psychotic) woman who could be the Alpha Female. The bigger the bitch, the more he falls. While the entire story takes place over just a few days, the connection and attraction between Zach and Sara cannot be denied, and one thing I like about Shelly's book is the humour. Why do I recommend this book? Because it's funny. Because despite reading it three or four times, I still get tingly in all the right spots. And I just love all the characters. Not just the main two, but the supporting characters as well. They're all just a little bit bitchy, crazy, funny and loyal. All characteristics I like in my friends.

★★★★★ from Snowbunny1977 on May 11, 2015I absolutely loved it. NowThese was my first Shelly Laurenston book. I absolutely loved it. Now, I'm doing a review now because I never one at the time...years ago. I re-read it today and decided to go ahead and review it as well.Sara, Sara, Sara...she is scary and a total bad *** b*tch. Thats how you describe her...seriously. Zack, Zack, Zack...can be scary...total a-hole, albeit a hot one and in protection mode for Sara. He can't stay away. He's an Alpha male and will be taking over the Magnus Pack soonish. After a little fun times at a party involving Zack and Sara...things change for her. Like she turns into a wolf kind of change. She is beyond pissed and scared. She is a bit mentally imbalanced but it totally works in her favor. Her friends Miki and Angelina are equally bitchy but for different reasons. They are sooo fun to read. When Zack and Sara first do the deed as in *ex it is VIOLENT! Whew...man that is hot! Ha. She has to fight for her life cause those damn cats wont leave her be. Is she strong enough to be Alpha Female along with Zack? Will she survive it all and secure her place? This series is sorta intertwined with her Pride series. We get little cameos here and there. Love this book and series. I love Shelly Laurenston aka G A Aiken. She does awesome work and you will laugh your butt off. Check her out!So....asterisks I had to use cause otherwise Amazon wouldnt let me post my review. Not like they were huge cuss words but whatevs.
