Storytelling for Lawyers

Review

"'Make no mistake about it - lawyers are storytellers. It is how we make our livings,' Philip N. Meyer tells us, and convincingly proves, in his extraordinary Storytelling for Lawyers. Brilliantly exploring how issues of voice, plot, characterization, language, and narrative structure inform every aspect of the practice of law, Meyer tells a story no one in legal scholarship or practice has ever told before. Everyone, in every area of law, from beginning students to the most erudite scholars and accomplished practitioners, will profit substantially from this book." --Lawrence Joseph, author of Lawyerland "Readers of the book will come away with a deep appreciation of the possibilities for interplay between stories in law and in the broader culture, beyond anything that they can obtain from any other book with which I am familiar." --Neal Feigenson, author of Legal Blame: How Jurors Think and Talk About Accidents "Breathtaking in its sophistication, Storytelling for Lawyers is an unparalleled introduction to the art of legal storytelling. Meyer leads us through a fascinating and sometimes counterintuitive exploration of the building blocks of a good story - characters, plots, themes, and all the rest. Lawyers and law students everywhere should read this book, mark it up, and keep a battered copy within easy reach." --Linda H. Edwards, author of Legal Writing, Process, Analysis, and Organization and Readings in Persuasion: Briefs that Changed the World "No one knows the terrain, the feel, and the reach of stories better than Philip N. Meyer. What he tries to do, and does so brilliantly in Storytelling for Lawyers is to take readers 'inside' the story. It's hard to imagine a storytelling lawyer who couldn't benefit from Meyer's book." --James R. Elkins, Editor of Legal Studies Forum and Lawyer Poets and That World We Call Law "How lawyers tell stories to juries and judges is the subject of Meyer's recently published book, Storytelling for Lawyers. The book is intended not just for law students learning how to craft persuasive arguments, but for lay people simply curious about how popular culture, literature and the canon of case law mesh in the modern legal system." --Valley News "An excellent primer on narrative theory for lawyer-storytellers has now appeared... Meyer's book is a great story about lawyers telling stories. He brings his lawyer-storytellers to life and critiques their narrative efforts with great delight. I welcomed his reminder that the best lawyers can be and are artists." --MARQUETTE UNIVERSITY LAW SCHOOL FACULTY BLOG "Philip N. Meyer's splendid book, Storytelling for Lawyers, is both an explanation of this phenomenon and a master class on what makes an effective story and how to construct one." -David R. Dow, Rice University, Vermont Law Review"For me, the ultimate test of any book that makes recommendations about the practice of law is whether I can use the information it conveys now. This book proved an immediate help for me in working on an appellate brief...I don't know that I'll make to the promised land of the perfect brief, but now I have stronger sense of what it will read like." -greenleafadvocacy.com"Meyer's argument is not only about constructing a story, it is also about the use of compelling language... the text could be put to excellent use in a law & humanities classroom as a starting point for students to conduct similar narrative analysis of court filings and transcripts." -Jinee Lokaneeta, Law and Society Review "Storytelling for Lawyers is a well-done exploration of legal storytelling and would be well placed in any lawyer's toolbox of practical works. This title is recommended for attorneys and for law libraries that collect practice-oriented materials." -Christine Timko, Law Librarian, Nevada Supreme Court Law Library, Law Library Journal "In short, it is when he shows how virtually every major strategic decision has to be approached taking emotions and psychology into account that Meyer is at his strongest. Meyer has provided a valuable tool for legal practitioners-a series of steps to go through when putting together a brief, or going before a judge or jury, or preparing law students for what comes next." -Marshall Goldberg, The Journal of Legal Education "If I were teaching a course devoted to advanced persuasive legal writing or to trial or appellate advocacy, Storytelling for Lawyers would be one of the required texts." -Diane Kraft, Assistant Professor of Legal Research and Writing, University of Kentucky College of Law, Legal Writing Institute The Second Draft "Any law student or lawyer who wants to develop their skills practicing the facts should benefit from studying 'Storytelling for Lawyers." - Jennifer Romig, Listen Like a Lawyer Blog"The simple yet elegant manner in which Philip Meyer illustrates the anecdotal structures makes [Storytelling for Lawyers] a must read . . . This book can benefit law professors and students alike, as well as the most accomplished lawyers, and should be kept on hand at all times." - Keith Williams, American Bar Association for Law Students

This book is a great starting point for developing the skill of storytelling for lawyers as was intended by the author. The author gives you the basics for developing the plot, characters, style, setting, and narrative for your trial with excellent examples. The author is a law professor and the book seems geared for the law student or novice lawyers getting into litigation. I only gave the book 4 out of 5 stars because of a couple of minor problems. However, the chapter on narrative needs further exposition and appears to be written in rushed manner. In addition, the physical binding of the book is of poor quality requiring me to glue the cover back on. Finally, the author missed the point that the lawyer's job is to look at his case as a giant puzzle to be solved and then explained as a story. It is not enough to understand your case but equally imperative that you communicate your case which is best done through the storytelling technique. This is a must read for lawyers getting up to speed on litigation. For further exposition on legal storytelling for lawyers after reading Meyer's book on Storytelling for Lawyers, I recommend the following:Win Your Case: How to Present, Persuade, and Prevail--Every Place, Every TimeStory: Substance, Structure, Style and the Principles of ScreenwritingThe Art of Storytelling: From Parents to ProfessionalsBeyond Bullet Points: Using Microsoft PowerPoint to Create Presentations That Inform, Motivate, and Inspire (Business Skills)ABA webinar available with an internet search for "Storytelling for Lawyers"

BOOK REVIEW: MEYER, Philip N., Storytelling for LawyersISBN: 978-0-19-5396638Read June, 13th-27th, 2017.This book discusses storytelling tools by presenting a series of examples of good storytelling, both in legal settings and in literary works and movies. If theoretical explanations are sometimes a bit dry, the frequent quoting of practical examples conveys fluidity and speed to the book. After an introduction presenting lawyers as storytellers, it deals with the roles played in storytelling by Plots (chapters 2 and 3); Character (4 and 5); Voice, Perspective, Details and Images, and Rhytm and Speed (which relate to Scene and Summary) (chapter 6); Place or Story Environment (chapter 7) and Narrative Time.Focusing maybe too narrowly on legal storytelling before American juries, plot is almost equated with melodrama. Films like Jaws and High Noon are extensively discussed, as Gerry Spence’s Closing Argument on Behalf of Karen Silkwood. The chapters on character offer interesting insights on character classification (“round” characters, with psychological depth, prone to suffer transformation as the story evolves, vs. “flat” ones), while discussing the tools for telling how a character is, as opposed to simply showing the psychological nature of each character’s character through dialogue or the actions the character performs. Examples include Tobias Wolff’s This Boy’s Life and Jeremiah Donovan’s Closing Arguments on Behalf of Louis Failla, in a 13-week trial the Author could scrupulously attend in person.Discussions on Voice, Perspective, Details and Images, Scene and Summary, criticize the basic assumptions of the neutrality of lawyers’ voices, exemplifies how to manage details to suggest ideas and emotions, draw on the distinction between showing and telling, and offers interesting insights into the narrative theory’s concept of stretch (the slowing of the narrative rhythm in relation to the narrated story’s). Environment depiction storytelling tools deals with Joan Didion’s The White Album and the Judicial Opinion in a Rape Case, quoting also from W. G. Sebald’s The Emigrants and the Petition Briefs in Reck v. Ragen and Miranda v. Arizona. Further examples are Kathryn Harrison’s While They Slept and the Petitioner’s Brief in Eddings v. Oklahoma. Finally, the chapter on Narrative Time draws on Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse Five and explores time, rhythm or speed, discussing more deeply stretch and the relation of time of the narrative itself with the time of the facts dealt with in the narrative. Chronology is discussed and criticized; Analepsis or Flashback is didactically explained and exemplified, both in general storytelling theory and in its legal use; the same holds for Prolepsis (Flash-forward) and Ellipsis (the intentional omission of a part of the narrative, often with the purpose of emphasizing the omitted event. Pacing and Rhythm are discussed in more lenght, with the caveat - repeated somewhat throughout the book - that legal stories are often left unfinished by the lawyer, in order to allow the jurors or judges fill the end with their decision. The Author remarks his purpose was to suggest possible tools and ways of dealing with problems which arise in legal storytelling, and he delivers what he promises.

Few people are as qualified as Philip Meyer to write a book on storytelling for lawyers. With a background as a trial lawyer, he has plenty of practical, real-life experience in the courtroom. His approach is not that of an academic giving purely theoretical advice, but that of a seasoned lawyer who knows the ins and outs of the legal profession. His experience as a professor (of both law and writing) has honed his ability to effectively communicate his ideas to a broad audience. Not only is this book helpful for the practicing lawyer, it is also useful and not too complex for the legal neophyte or casual reader. This book breaks storytelling (narrative) down to its core components and analyzes them one by one. In the process of analyzing each part of a story, Philip Meyer skillfully explores each component with a non-legal example (e.g. movies, books, etc.) before applying it to a legal example (e.g. courtroom proceedings, appellate briefs, closing arguments, etc.) By first analyzing each part of a story (i.e. plot, setting, etc.) from a well-known story that resonates with the reader, he sets a strong foundation before transitioning to a legal story, thus making it easy for the reader to identify and better understand each part of the legal story.I highly recommend this book to anyone remotely interested in storytelling and persuasion as they relate to the legal profession.

Last year I did three jury trials in three weeks. At the conclusion of the third trial I realized that I have not changed the way I present a case to the jury since 1992. I invested in a number of books to improve and change the way I present a case in trial. Professor Meyer's book is one of the few legal books I have read that provides useful and practical tips that can be utilized in private practice.

I was reading a book about a killer who was also a werewolf. When he was confronted, to be brought down, he stated he could not be killed because he was a "Samyaza", one of the "giants". Not knowing the word, "Samyaza", I looked it up. It was a word directly from the Bible. That information brought me to this book, which explained about the fall of Lucifer and the other rebellious angels from heaven. God showed me, as a child of Jesus Christ, the connection of what this book said and the Holy Scriptures. I had been allowing fear of what I saw coming, to overcome the trust I have in God's power. I want to thank the author for reminding me of the power I have as a child of God, but also allowing me to understand what is happening around me. Also, my father is one of 12 children born to a God-fearing woman who served God and showed her children who Jesus was in her life. Out of the children of those twelve, scattered across America, most of us have accepted Christ and are attempting to uphold the banner high. This book has shown me that I need to let my family know the extent of the battle before us. I will be mentioning this book as a Must Read, as part of our role against the forces of evil coming against every person in this world.

I read this book after recently coming to the conclusion that my alien abductions were actually demonic attacks. This book supports that theory and offers much in the way of biblical and other historic textual references to the activities of these beings in the past. There is nothing new under the sun.It is important that those who have had these experiences do not become deceived by these so-called aliens. I thought I was "chosen," and privy to cutting-edge, secret knowledge. The rabbit hole goes very deep when you stay in the UFO research world for years, as I did. I only wish I'd come to my senses sooner. I wish more people like Quarterman mingled with the UFO community, so it could be made aware. There is not much mixing between the Christian crowd and the New Age/Occult/UFO crowd. As a newly returned Catholic, I hope to be a bridge between these worlds, and this book is empowering. When my UFO friends want to question my new conclusion, I now have several books to give them that will open their eyes to this view.I would recommend this book as well as Nick Redfern's Final Events for anyone wanting to consider another view of what's really behind the UFOs and abductions. These demons posing as aliens are setting themselves up as star people who will be our saviours from ourselves. We should not fall for their tricks and technology. I have personally had one of these beings try to suck out my soul through my solar plexus. I was able to stop it in Jesus' name. There are many reports similar to mine. They are downplayed and supressed by the New Agers.

Fallen Angels, by CK Quarterman is a great book. It is an easy read. Fallen Angels is a great book for those new to the subjects of Nephilim, UFO Encounters & the New World Order. Not only is it a good basic primer, but is also good for those who know a bit about the subject who want more information. Now I can't say that I agree with every tenant of his book, but I found it well researched. Because it was written to be easily understood by leader and layman alike some subjects may contain less data or discussion material. That shouldn't be a demerit point. Keep in mind much of the material is speculative in nature. Keep in mind as well that it discusses points that are highly controversial as well as being taboo in some circles. CK does a great job of backing up his research, but since he uses the end note style, if you don't read the end-notes section you may think he is a sloppy researcher; he is not. What I also found rewarding is that his book contained a good combination of scholarly referencing and personal experience/insight. CK also included a personal encounter experience with a "jackal head." Not many people mention that type of creature which I first heard about on Coast to Coast AM.

I would recommend this book, I downloaded it on kindle. I bought another copy I'm about to purchase a third copy, the second copy was to lend to someone else. But I said if they didn't return it then I still wanted another copy on hand. When I was at my former church a visitor was there and this lady was starting to speak on the Fallen Angels. I have to admit when I heard this I literally thought that she was crazy!!! Never in my mind have I heard anyone speak on the Fallen Angels, let alone to have had sex with the daughters of men. This book will really have you yearning to know more because there is so much that they are leaving out that people need to know!!!

I enjoyed this book and it is one of three I recommend on this topic to my friends when we discuss the fallen. This book is a little different I felt then some of the others as it mentions some subjects I have heard people mention very rarely in passing, but haven't heard a lot. Whether some of the information is accurate or not I do not actually know, but it is still interesting and goes into a bit more detail about those topics. When you read some of the things in the book, it does beg the question is some of this potentially true and how does it mesh with what we are always told to believe.

This book provides an onsidw view of the workings of this world and thw mechanisms of its nemesis. All people will find the information very useful and spiritually awakening.

Great book but you need to read his other book called The Watchers first. Another excellent book. I definitely recommend both. Thanks Pastor Quarterman for your insightful books.

This book is very informative and full of information about Giants and UFOs and what they are and where they came from. It is confirmed by what is written in the Bible.

Satin Cinnabar is a richly detailed story that's part romance, part mystery. Barbara Gaskell Denvil has a unique writing style and presents things in an eloquent and sometimes unexpectedly refreshing way. I particularly liked the dialogue since it wasn't stilted or contrived and appropriate to the time period. The lower class characters are very well portrayed and practically jump off the page.Alex is a well drawn, multi-dimensional character who could be hustler, thief, friend, lover, and devoted cousin all at once. Katherine, on the other hand, was a bit irritating at times. I had to keep reminding myself that this girl was eighteen and not eight. Her page, who was delightful, had more sense and character and his comments always made me smile.I would happily recommend this book to anyone who enjoys historical romance and wants to spend a few hours skulking around the manor houses and back alleys of fifteenth century London.

Alex Quyrril has the misfortune to regain his senses buried under a heap of dead bodies. The battle of Bosworth is over, Richard Plantagenet is dead and Alex faces an uncertain and daunting future. What sort of life can he expect under the Tudor upstart? And so starts a book that has me rushing back home from work to continue reading, just as hooked by charming Alex as I am by the cloak and dagger plot, complete with an unsavoury priest, an absolutely charming page called Tom and tomboy Kate, the most reluctant bride to Alex' new employer. The dialogue is delightful, fast and witty with a clarity of tone that has me hearing voices in my head, Alex' darker timbre intermingled with Kate's anything but dulcet feminine voice. The descriptions are excellent - now and then a tad too detailed - bringing to life the surroundings in which the story takes place. The streets are narrow and crooked, torches and tallow candles fill rooms and halls with acrid smoke, the solars of the rich are warm and welcoming while the back alleys of London are dark, damp and dangerous. I love how Kate's countenance is tinged a faint green by the light falling through the thick mullion glass, how dirty snow rimes London's streets. What really makes Satin Cinnabar stick out is the historical detail, inserted with such elegance that the reader never notices just how much facts the author is imparting. No long harangues, no paragraphs of "info" as to what is happening in the realm of England, how people dress, what they eat. Instead garments, foodstuffs and objects are casually mentioned in passing, with an adequate description sort of smuggled into the text. Ladies wear blanchets, and while I have no idea what a blanchet is I quickly realise it is borderline immodest to wear only a blanchet. Men have ladders up their hose (Of course they do! It just never struck me before that the fifteenth century male would know exactly what it feels to see your stocking - sorry, hose - marred by unraveling threads and not have any nail polish at hand with which to stop it from travelling onwards) pages serve their masters hypocras, and in hidden closets people add dangerous cinnabar to their alchemical experiments. This is a book that bombards the reader with sounds, smells and tastes. It paints views and pictures, it makes history spring alive, immersing the reader in the distant past.Ms Gaskell Denvil has written a wonderful novel, where a strong plot, vibrant characters and a well-described historical setting combine into a most pleasing whole. I can but congratulate all those readers who have this delightful experience before them and look forward to reading more of Ms Gaskell Denvil's excellent writing.

I was absolutely delighted with this novel by Barbara Gaskell Denvil. The story starts with the protagonist, Alex, regaining consciousness at the end of the Battle of Bosworth, where he and his family and household fought for their King Richard against "the Tudor bastard", and follow him through the first months of the reign of Henry Tudor. With him we experience the upheaval the regime change brought to the upper classes, but the novel's best feature is its description of the lives of ordinary people. The lives of the servants in the great houses and the working class Londoners are so often missing in historical fiction, but not here. Barbara's description is excellent and through it the reader can feel and smell what life would have been like. Her characterisation is equally strong and we emphasise with her characters.Thrown in is a murder mystery (yes, the reader gets the important clues) and a love story. Love stories in historical fiction can sometimes be a bit cloying, but this one is refreshingly different. It is a gripping and engrossing story, a real page turner, while maintaining a high level of historical accuracy. A thoroughly enjoyable read and I can't wait to read more by this writer.

This is a romance amateur detective historical novel, it provides a background fabric to the times. The time period is after the Battle of Bosworth in which Richard III was removed, and Henry VI came to the throne of England. The fabric is well painted and characterized, and keeps you reading. Most of the story is historically believable. I have read other books by Denvil and will read more, that in itself is a recommendation. She delivers a real sense of the time she is placing you in.

This is one book where the phrase couldn't put it down is appropriate. The characters are so well created that you feel like you know them. The storyline was enchanting and gory in places but very genuine to the period it was set in. I love this authors style of storytelling so descriptive without bogging down in detail and loosing the reader a hard combination to pull of but done seamlessly here.I loved the romance that was woven through Satin Cinnabar but the murder mystery makes this book so much more than a romance novel. The mystery is intriguing and keeps you guessing.Looking forward to her next novel.

although i wouldn't put it on my list of favorites, i did find myself thinking and wondering about the characters throughout the day, which is a good sign that it kept my interest. i read books mostly to fall asleep at night and this one was good for that.

Once I got into this book found it quiet good slow at start

I love this author. Complex plot and great writing. Not quite as good as "Fair Weather," I look forward to more from her.
