"The principle of calling things that are not as though they were is the spiritual principle through which everything physical becomes manifest,: according to Charles Capps. I have sat under his teachings on this principle from Romans 4:17. It works. If you are a believer, you can apply this to anything that is in accordance to God's word. When I was living in Tulsa, OK I had to sell our house quickly but the housing market was dead! I walked around our house 7 times saying, "House, I call you SOLD in the Name of Jesus, according to Romans 4:17." It sold in 2 weeks.

Capps simply lays out the truth of the Word of God - we have what we say. If you're a born again, Holy Spirit filled believer, find scripture for what you're believing for and start speaking it forth with authority until it manifests in the natural.

For many years, I have been in hot pursuit of more of Jesus, learning to walk in the authority of Jesus, knowing He has been given all authority in heaven and on earth and He gives freely to us who believe for every situation we face. THIS was the missing piece! As I have put it into practice, I find that it has been transforming me into the kind of 'end-time believer I have longed to be and the Bible talks about! More Lord!

This was an amazing little book! I absolutely love that it was filled with just the basic reality of life: we must face reality. Ignoring something doesn't make it go away, it just means you are ignoring it. My favorite passage was this one:"If the problem exists, you don't deny that the problem exists. If you are sick, you don't deny that you are sick. But on the other hand you don't want to always be confessing your sickness either. Some who misunderstand this message think if they are sick, they should say, 'I'm not sick.' Just denying you are sick won't make you well. In fact, that could be a lie. But there is a difference between a lie and a confession."This really was a profoundly inspiring read, and I would recommend it for Christians everywhere!!!

This book helps to straighten out the concept of how to truly call those things that are not as they were. I knew of the one instance recorded in Scripture found in Romans 4:17. Now I have other Scriptures to add to my arsenal to increase my faith in seeing those things manifest in my life through my profession. Speaking the solution and not the problem.

Even a person's salvation is confessed to before it is a reality. We believe we are going to heaven before we get there and proclaim it. So why not also proclaim anything you are asking of God. Charles Capps does an excellent job of making this simple so anyone can understand.

I believe that you are what you speak. Believe in speaking God's word so that you shall live His word and live in authority over your life.

This is a classic text. Highly recommended for any Christian who is serious about Bible study and prayer. Can't overstate the importance of this biblical principle which is frequently missed or glossed over. This biblical principle is absolute dynamite. It will change your life. This particular edition comes in a tiny booklet which I hate. Prefer the standard paperback size.

Tools, rules, techniques are necessary, but not sufficient to move an organization toward a culture of continuous improvement. It is indeed the daily behavior of the people inside the framework of the organization that defines the culture. The Improvement Kata and the Coaching Kata are not new, but they are explained here in a way that makes them an integrated whole and accessible to anyone who will take the time to study this excellent work. I remember back in the 80s when I first read Tom Peter's "In Search of Excellence". He described what is essentially the Improvement Kata and to a lesser degree the Coaching Kata. I remember how shocked I was to read his prescription for revitalizing continuous improvement -- i.e. that organizations must "fail faster". He was of course referring to rapid PDCA cycles where learning rapidly builds upon learning (through failure and success) in a never ending procession toward ever better processes. The Coaching Kata is what ties it all together so that through "respect for people" the Improvement Kata can grow progressively stronger and more pervasive throughout the organization. This is the key to what I've always thought of as "continuously improving the improvement system". Without the Coaching Kata, each improvement effort, regardless of how successful, is robbed of its full potential to create not just process change, but change in the people who created the process change. This evolution of the people, not just the processes, that is the key. Rother explains how this works with clarity and precision. I highly recommend this book.

I'd previously given this book a 5 star review based upon reading. Now I can reaffirm based on DOING! Two weeks ago we launched our first real Lean "experiment"/ improvement process. I took the role of mentor in the teaching kata, and guided my Production Manager to help me write an A3 for how to dramatically reshape our shipping department. I didn't feel entirely comfortable, as I didn't have solid experience with ANY of the tools which are touted to fill up most "Lean" books. But by simply simply writing and mentoring the teaching of an A3, as taught in this book, we discovered all sorts of issues we hadn't been considering. And then, when we began to implement the formal plan -- as this book forewarned us to expect -- we uncovered a lot of additional considerations. That was several weeks ago. We are continuing to iterate on the improvement kata; it is clear we are on the right track to substantial improvement in the department and it is also more clear than ever that Lean isn't about "quick fix", short-term thinking (another lesson from this book).I've now purchased SIX copies of the book as we are picking up speed, proceeding to roll Lean out through all the aspects of our national business. It will doubtless take me years to really feel I am a fully experienced "Lean" practitioner. But I can't praise this book enough: Forget reading all the other books until you've really read this one. I wish I could take at least one star away from pretty nearly all the other Lean books out there so this one would really stand out as the shining STAR that it is.----Previous review:Of the probably 15 books I've read so far on "lean", this one stands alone in actually trying to teach the thinking *behind* Toyota's mindset of continuous improvement. As the author himself admits -- despite all the books, seminars, and consulting -- NOBODY has yet duplicated Toyota's results. You can be pretty sure you will fail, also, if you try to implement lean as a group of tools taught by a consultant. The tools are absolutely the LEAST important aspect of Toyota's success. In the author's words: "What we have been doing is observing Toyota's current visible practices, classifying them into lists of elements and principles and then trying to adopt them. This is reverse engineering ... and it is not working so well."I do think Lean has a lot to offer; It only makes sense that there a better and worse ways to do everything and that improvement really has no limits. The proper place to start, and to ground, is in the philosophy and more subtle behaviors at Toyota. The particular techniques are pretty much valueless without culture change and this is the only book I've read so far which really teaches that.

Excellent Book. This covers what you need to know to start teaching the improvement Kata. If you want to develope your teams capabilities and learn how to be a better hands on coach then read this book. I thoroughly enjoyed the examples that were outlined. Take the book serious and put actions into your daily practice.

Do you care about Quality? Do you care enough to think about it, study it, practice it, and discipline yourself to achieve it?If you do, treat yourself to Mike Rother and associates' thoughts on the subject. Read carefully, you will find a perspective, a discipline, and tools that can help you achieve satisfaction from your attention and skillful work.Placed in the context of the Toyota Production System, Mike Rother offers the benefit of years of observation, study, and practice in the kata of continuous improvement. My personal application is not in a manufacturing context and therefore must be adapted to fit the time constants and activities particular to my institution's work but the principles are clear and implementable. The down side, at least from a short term "I want results and profits NOW!" perspective, is that it takes time, especially at the institutional level, to achieve noticeable results. So, pick your payoff.

My background is in process improvement for over 25 years. Much of the writing and approach to process improvement focuses on the mechanics and not the underlying management philosophy necessary to achieve high performance through continuous improvement. In contrast, the author does a great job at describing his deeper insights about the intellectual foundation of what has made Toyota such a dominant force. He makes those ideas accessible to a wide audience of managers who want to adopt these ideas through examples and easy to grasp models.I look forward to applying these ideas and coaching techniques to help my team achieve our current "target conditions" and long term vision. For those in senior management roles, I highly recommend reading The Four Disciplines of Execution which is a complementary set of ideas that starts at the organizational strategy level. These two books together make for a powerful combination around implementation of modern CPI thinking.

Review

"First time novelist, Paul H. Yarbrough, masterfully transports readersdeep into the world of Mississippi Cotton, where life is not as simpleas it seems." ~Julie Cantrell, editor, Southern Literary Review andbestselling author of Into the Free "In Mississippi Cotton a 20th Century Huck Finn has a real adventure. No matter that his raft is a Trailways Bus along the river, the trip is no less toward maturity. If you like a good story, this is your book, a book told by someone whoknows the terrain--its history, people, landscape and culture. Only aproper native could have his narrator say that his daddy taught himnever to hold onto anything with Lincoln's face longer than you had to." ~Dr. James Everett Kibler, author, Walking Toward Home, Memories Keep, and Our Father's Fields"Set in 1951, in the fictional Deltatown of Cotton City, the story is more broadly a Southern story...anagrarian story. It is also a murder mystery. The body of an unknown manis found in the river at the Greenville Bridge. Jake's bus ride visit to his Delta cousins begins a parallel journey that ends in the discoveryof the dead mans identity." ~Noel Workman, Delta Magazine

From the Author

Paul Yarbrough's critically-acclaimed debut novel, MISSISSIPPI COTTON, brings to light the complex history of rural Mississippi in the 1950's. It is 1951. Young Jake Conner gets on a bus to visit his cousins in the Mississippi Delta. But when the body of an unknown man is found in the Mississippi River, Jake's summer vacation gets a little more adventurous as he and his cousins snoop around in a mystery that is better left to the grown ups. Southern stories, Southern writers, Southern writing, are indeed a study: From the fiction of Joel Chandler Harris to Margaret Mitchell and Caroline Gordon to Tom Wolfe, John Grisham and James Kibler. From the essays of the Vanderbilt Agrarians to Clyde Wilson (THE authority on John C. Calhoun), the richness of Southern literature has been a devotion of my lifelong education. To love Magnolias and Roses is not to love flowers, it is to love beauty. And like these two, Southern Literature sometimes is pure and white, and sometimes dark red with thorns. But in my world, all, and both are striking, and didactic, and beautiful. I once told a friend that there were three books every Southerner should have in his library: Gone with the Wind, I'll Take My Stand, and the Bible. I did comment: "Not necessarily in that order." It isn't the case that all Southern prose, from Virginia to Texas, is captured by these. But they do reach into the Southern soul for a view of life, past present and future. And that is what I want to write and read about: the South and its life: past, present and future. The South is more than worthy of study.

Before Jake had even got into Cotton City to visit his cousins, he heard of a body that was found in the river. Now he and his cousins are doing their own investigation. They go out at night to investigate because their days are filled with hoeing the cotton fields, going fishing, and well, probably because there's less chance of being found out what they're up to. Feel their fear as they hide out under the porch and 8-year old Casey digs his fingers into Jake's arm.Even the bus ride into Cotton City is able to hold the reader's interest as Jake has to share his seat with an old woman with way too much rouge on her cheeks which makes her yellow teeth look even yellower. She drinks what smells like lighter fluid from a Barq's Root Beer bottle which she shares with the stranger in the busting-at-the-seams shirt across the aisle who convinces her he doesn't have TB.Laugh out loud moments such as when the old woman on the bus mentions her "late" husband and Jake asks what he was late for.The author describes what it's like working in the cotton fields. I knew it would be back-breaking but I hadn't thought about the bugs and spiders that are particular to that area. It's easy to picture yourself sitting at the counter in the drugstore, sipping a cherry coke or down by the water poking a stick at a snake to determine whether it's alive or not. And try not to bust out laughing as you catch Casey staring at Mrs. Culpepper's bosom and sort of blinks both his eyes at you.

This novel took me back to my Southern roots. I could feel the hot sun, taste the sweet iced tea and fried chicken. This was a novel about one young man's summer away from home for the first time. It was almost like reading his diary and sharing his adventures. I enjoyed his compassionate spirit and sensitive nature. This is a book that I will be proud to have in my collection.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. This book was about a young black boy, Jake, growing up in the 1950's. If you think this book might be about racism or strife between blacks and whites, it is not. The book is not built on a foundation of racism or pity for the former slaves and the current black land owners. Instead, the book incorporated pride, a strong work ethic, respect for one's elders, the importance of family and church, and the amazing bonds of friendship in the black community. In fact, one of the elders tells the boys if they know someone who doesn't want to work hard, they are to avoid him. There's nothing in here I would not want a tween reading, because even though there is a murder, it is not gruesome or gory. There is another murder from the past that is revealed. Even though it is more gory, it's still not overly described. I appreciated this book very much. In fact, I may read it again soon. It was an interesting murder mystery and a tale of boys enjoying their summer together.

I downloaded this book even though it seemed to be more slanted to young adults because, being from the South, I am always interested in reading books set in the Deep South. I am so happy that I did! When I was reading Mississippi Cotton, I was transported back to my childhood days of growing up in rural Louisiana. We also went to school for only a half day during the month of September because we kids had to help get that cotton out of the fields. Even the author's use of slang was right on Southern speaking as only a fellow Southerner could have done it. Thanks, Paul, for taking me on a trip back to my youthful days of growing up in the Deep South!

Although this book was written from a 10 year old boys perspective, I wouldn't necessarily classify it as a YA book.It is a nice trip through the early 50's with a look at expected behaviours of the period. There is a murder that involves several people from the town and the mystery is all seen and told through Jakes eyes, as he and his cousins lurk around eavesdropping and asking questions when they can.The mystery was slowly developed, and not predictable or formulaic. The editing was clean with good grammer and spelling for the most part. There was no smut making it an appropriate read for any age group.Excellent book by a talented author.

A charming story of a childhood summer in the Mississippi delta in a time not yet modern when people sat on front porches, remembered their manners, and enjoyed fried chicken and freshly baked pies for Sunday dinner. This is a story rich in texture, one that appeals to all the senses.Warmed by the author's love for all that is Mississippi, the tale flows like the great river. The only criticism rose toward the end of the book from the author's stepping away from storytelling to wax a bit too long about his passion for the place, the people and their history. He would have been better served simply trusting his readers to share his feelings through their delightful encounters with Jake and company.

I'm not normally interested in old-time South stories. While some can be truly good stories, they're also very depressing with horrible race issues and with many evil people hating and abusing others. Thusly I started this book with some trepidation. To my surprise, I found this book entertaining and enjoyable! There is a murder mystery the boys get involved in, of course, but it was well handled. It was so refreshing to read a book where the common people and the police were fair with all races and just wanted to do the right thing.I wouldn't be uncomfortable sharing this story with young readers and for me, that's saying a lot!

Reading this story of young Jake and his friends and the mystifying world of the adults was almost like tearing pages out of my own past and weaving a darn good story around them. I hope that Paul Yarbrough will continue to write books such as this one. This is a 10 star book and one heck of an excellent first novel. I'll be looking for his future works. Mr. Paul Yarbrough, you done yourself good. Keep writing. Every one else, if you want a good clean story about what growing up was like in much of America for most boys in the 1950's then this is the book you'll want to read.

I appreciate Charles Stanley's teaching ability, however, this book was much more simplistic than I expected. I wish they had included more information in each chapter. If you just answer the questions and read the passages they list, you could miss some of what they are trying to communicate. I highly recommend studying the whole story that they include as the Old Testament example. Read all the passages surrounding the texts that they recommend. It will help you get a fuller picture of what they are trying to say. I use this in my women's Bible study, and I spend a few days preparing to make sure I can properly explain everything that is presented. We have all really enjoyed the study with the extra emphasis and explanations. From new believers to mature believers, we have all learned something from each lesson. Just put in a little extra effort and you will really learn some great life principles from God's word!

Dr. Charles Stanley writes, I read! I have been using this bible study for the past few months and I'm only half way through. This is very thought provoking and will draw you nearer to God. I purchased this to go along with the "30 Life Principles Bible". Please don't hesitate to purchase this study.

I love this series. I watch the 30 Life Principle series on InTouch.org, have the Life Principle Bible, Charles Stanley's Handbook for Christian Living, & books from The In Touch Series concerning each principle in greater detail. This book is a study guide that requires Bible reading with Q & A throuout this book. I like this better than passive reading because many thought provoking questions are asked which challenges your faith to grow. You see examples of Bible characters & how they responded to God's call & how God empowered them to do His will to do great & marvelous things if they would obey. God still works today in the lives of believers just as He did in the Bible days. The book moves me & makes me feel as eager to serve God as when I was a new Christian. Each chapter may only be a few pages long, but the book is an excellent educational tool. More importantly the book is also life changing for the Christian.Since I have begun working on completion of this book, I have found it very useful to incorporate the use of the Believer's Bible Commentary by William MacDonald which is useful to give background information to specific passages as well as the meaning of certain passages. Sometimes this commentary specifically answers the question leaving no doubt as to its meaning. I like an indepth study.

1. About buying this on Amazon - they arrived in two days in perfect condition. I’m rarely disappointed by Amazon ship times and conditions.2. About the workbook itself- I love it! I bought t a few years ago and just bought it again. Lots of scriptural references, very good summaries of how each life principle is actually applicable in present day life, examples of people in the Bible who lived out the principle (or didn’t), and plenty of questions to get you thinking.3. I am a nondenominational Christian and have used this workbook In a previous women’s study and am again using it in a women’s life group. We delve into a principle on our own, then discuss points that really stood out when we meet.4. The best part about this workbook is that you can see how every principle works only when you understand the very first one - your intimacy with God.

I've been reading the 30 Life Principles each day monthly until I know them well and they come to mind in specific circumstances and it always works out for me. I really wanted an explanation of each Principle w/o having to purchase the Principle Bible (I have several versions already) and reading the explanations certainly gave me great insight into how the Principles definitely are a sustaining factor for me.

Charles Stanley has such an understanding way of gettting the word of God across to me. I am sure that is why he is so popular among Christians. He may have a Doctorate degree, but is wise enough to understand that simplicity is the best way to get Gods message across to people.

I love Charles Stanley. and this book has everything. A principle, questions , how to apply what you have learned in each chapter. Combination lecture, study guide. All in one

This is interactive asking you to examine how you look at things and prioritize. I started it thinking I would be able to get through it in a few days or weeks but only on principle number 8 after 3 months. It leads you to scriptures and ask you questions that made me realize there are things about the old familiar stories in the bible that I had forgotten or overlooked. So I have been reading more carefully the stories of the journey through the wilderness and noah's ark and the flood. I really enjoy find all of the new things it is revitalizing and has renewed my zest for the Word.
