FIRST of all just let me address the few negative reviews that I've read in regard to this awesome series; and YES in my opinion it was awesome , and did not deserve the negative remarks that some of the reviewers left. While I acknowledge that everyone is entitled to their own opinions, it was apparent to me from their remarks that they hadn't bothered to read the description of the books and what their general content would be like. If they had bothered to read the synopsis of the books before they purchased them, they would have seen that the books were for people who were comfortable with "mature themes "; and "dark imagery "! For anyone to even attempt to read a novel about medieval Scottish Highlanders, and not expect it to be violent and bloody, are delusional if they think that times back then were all about riding across the heather-strewn Scottish Moores riding from castle to castle, rescuing fair lasses with nary a blow being struck to accomplish such feats. The times back then were bloody, brutal, and violent, and the ancient Roman's were some of the most violent and ruthless of all. Consider the cruscifiction of Jesus Christ, believe it or not, that was a common form of execution used by the ancient Romans for many centuries. This entire series of books; were primarily fantasy; although I appreciated Hazel Hunter's use of a glossary and a dictionary to help explain the meaning and pronunciation of many of the names and terms used in the books, which had some basis in historical fact. To those who found the subject matter too graphic either in the violence it portrayed or the explicit, steamy sex scenes , then perhaps you should be more careful to read the description of the books you decide to purchase in the future. They do have books written that are described as "clean, or old-fashioned "; which might be much more to your liking. Personally, I like my historical novels to be as gritty and realistic as possible. ; and that means people often using foul language, graphic, bloody, battle scenes; and the love scenes also often explicit steamy. If your delicate sensibilities are easily offended by such things; then you should not be reading these books. However, if you want to read a unique perspective on Highlander/time travel romance, these books have it all. Brave immortal Highlanders; strong fiercely independent yet wounded in more ways than one women; mystical Druids ; both good and evil; and a Legion of undead ancient Romans. Stir well, throw in a magical time transporting oak grove, some powerful tats that seem to decide who winds up with whom on the ultimate mystery date; and you've got one of the best Series of I've ever read in this genre, and believe me I've read a lot! I didn't just voraciously read every single one of them I devoured them. The only thing that I can claim that disappointed me about this Series is that it had to come to an end after only five books; because I could have so easily read so many more about these magnificent men and their amazing women. I suppose all good things must come to an end, and it is better to end things on a high note, rather than let it languish in mediocrity. As long as your sensibilities aren't so delicate , and you aren't afraid to go into the dark with an immortal Highlander; prepare yourself for one of the best rides of your life.

Although time travel books in which the heroine finds herself transported into the midst of Scottish warriors in a long past era - in this case the year 1314 - are popular right now, this book is not a carbon copy of any of the others (and there are a LOT of others) but is fresh and different, in my opinion. You might think that immortal Highlanders and undead Roman legions are mutually exclusive (except for the virtual immortality part) and could never work together as part of a believable story. Add in Druids and a female Air Force captain who is badly wounded in a search and rescue mission in Afghanistan and you could be forgiven for throwing up your hands and saying "no way". Plus there's that time travel element. Well, I won't explain how the Highlanders were blessed with immortality or the Romans were cursed with vampirism or why there are Druids in the 14th century living on the Isle of Skye with the Highlanders or how Capt. Kinley Chandler develops a supernatural power she never dreamed of - but Ms. Hunter does and she makes you believe it all. She writes well, is extremely creative, good at world building and seamlessly ties all these seemingly disparate elements together in a really entertaining paranormal romance. There's also the "good guys against the bad guys" factor and that is a tried and true formula.Lachlan O'Donnel is the laird, or lord, of Clan O'Donnel and he is the requisite gorgeous Scotsman who, not surprisingly, is as wildly attracted to Kinley when she suddenly appears in his time as she is to him. There are some graphic sex scenes yet what I found most memorable about them were the words Lachlan says to Kinley while they make love, so beautifully lyrical that they brought tears to my eyes. Kinley is a warrior too and a perfect match for the brawny Highlander.Although I do not consider this a criticism, as a reviewer I want to add that there are scenes and descriptions of cruelty and brutality in this book. This is not a sweetness and light romance, so be forewarned. What I consider acceptable realism may not be to everyone's taste. But these scenes are not the focal point of the novel which is to entertain, not to shock or disturb. This is the first book by Hazel Hunter which I have read, and happily I've found a new author to follow. I'm looking forward to reading the other books in the Immortal Highlander series!

Graphic, sadistic violence and poorly researched. The Roman vampire bites his victim then uses his own blood to heal her marks right before he sodomizes and rips her guts out bathing himself in her blood? Really? The heroine is taken out of presumably the ICU for a drive by her psychiatrist with IV bags hanging? Don’t waste your time with this one!

I only gave this book a four star rating due to the literal sex scenes. The story is fantastic and holds your interest until the very end but I felt that the detailed sexual scenes were overly done and almost detracted from the story. I love a good love story with all the romance and lust but as an adult I don't need or want such in-depth description. I am not a pride but I feel like it was just a little too much!I am so looking forward to the next book and would recommend Ms. Hunter's writings to others but you need to be aware that there are explicit scenes.
