The people of the Kalevala belong to the first kind: they are Children-People. The educational way of approaching them, indicated by Ervast, is the same which can be used effectively by our teachers also today, because it is enrooted in the being of the child nature.Moreover, I think that another possibile use is for better understanding and better copying the multicultural world of today with the differences among people entering in contact each other more frequently than in the past. If we approach the common humanity in all of them, but don't forget the differences, it may be possibile to arrive to a mutual positive regard and to a better mutual understanding.

The only issue I have with this book is that Paul is operating on such a grand scale. Much of his ideas and suggestions, though absolutely sound, need to be downsized if intended to be applied by this reader. Not a big issue for me, as the foundational understanding is what I was truly after, and this book provides that. I plan to read it again once I've finished with the author's other book, Mycelium Running. If you don't have that book yet, quit screwing around and go buy it. Such a good read! And for those gardeners among us (like me), pair this and Mycelium Running with Teaming with Microbes (Lownfels&Lewis) and Teaming with Nutrients (Lowenfels). There are a lot of books, but these have all been great for me in my pursuit of a healthier food source for my family. Atherosclerosis is a killer, people. Source your protein better. Paul will show you how.

This is Paul Stemets continuation and addition to his original how-to book, "Mushroom Cultivator". I own both of these books and refer back to them often. This one goes into cultivation techniques at a more advanced level. Some of the ideas are more up-to-date as it was written many years later. This book covers a wider range of mushroom species and growth parameters. I would definitely recommend both of his books to anyone interested in growing mushrooms. This book also has a large section of color photographs, which his previous book does not. This book also covers more aspects of commercial cultivation of many species of mushrooms. I've used specific recipes from this book to mix my own agar for petri dishes, make my own mushroom spawn, and growing substrate. I've used the recommended temperature/humidity ranges with great success for growing Oyster, Lion's Mane, and Shiitake mushrooms. While there have been improvements on some of the techniques and ideas outlined by this book, since it's last revision, this book still offers the most complete and decisive understanding of mushroom cultivation as a whole. This is great book for beginners and experienced growers alike.

Paul Staments writes a great detailed book about growing gourmet and medicinal mushrooms. His book is comprehensive and gives the reader more than enough knowledge to start growing mushrooms. I had some experience growing mushrooms prior to beginning to read this book and still benefited immensely from this book. I highly recommend this book for any experience level grower. I have successfully cultivated blue oyster and reishi mushrooms following the guidance given in this book. I have created master cultures, petree dish cultures and mushroom grow medium all following advice from this book.

This book is fantastic! It's a textbook more than anything. I'm a scientist (but not biology) and it makes perfect sense. If you struggle with technical details he's got you covered, it's also pretty simple to follow his points. As I'm reading I start thinking "ok, so what about if you don't have that?" Or "so what is an agar medium anyway?" And literally the next section is devoted to my question. It's clear that the full picture is being laid out in a natural and easy to follow format. There's such a wealth of knowledge here! If you only take away the bullet points you'll still be able to put together a great mushroom patch. If you like to know the "why" behind things you do then it's all there. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand how the mushroom life cyle works and how to grow them in a plethora of methods.

I was looking for something I could read as a beginner to start growing my own mushrooms, this book is not it. It is however jam packed full of information, but is just somewhat difficult to sift through all of it an get a good understanding on what I am doing without a bunch of reading....this book is way thicker than I had imagined it would be. If you are looking for a book on mushrooms and have a good background on them and looking to fine tune your skills this would be helpful for you. If your are like me and just looking to get started I would choose something less confusing.

Nice, thick, full of photos, scholarly research and bibliography. I just wish some photos could have been printed in color. Author, Stamets, an expert, please publish the colors, we need them. Text information is spectacular. Better photos PLEASE!

This is an enlightening account of Nigeria's emergence as a nation and the Biafran struggle and the personal trials of this great man. But it is largely an autobiographical tribute to himself. I have been reading many newly emerging African novelists and find their work to be vibrant and vital and contagiously engaging. This ain't that. Good history but a bit tedious to read.

I first saw this author, Wole Soyinka, on a TV program, and was very intrigued by what he had to say, so ordered three books written by him.You Must set Forth at Dawn, The Lion and the Jewel, and Ake, the Years of Childhood. I would like to see everyone read these - - he described in detail much about his life, his struggles, his beliefs and in doing so opened another world for me in the process - - his history was so greatly different than anything I had known, and he really was able to explain his life - and his actions as he made decisions and tried to help others through the years.

I disagree with all those who think this is an exercise, by the author, in self aggrandisement and hubris.Far from it, this is an old man telling the story, or some stories, of the often turbulent and privileged life he has lived.To say the book is boring is an unfair comment by those who may seem threatened by Soyinka's word prowess.I have enjoyed all Soyinka's prose more than his poetry, and even drama( the beatification of area boy comes to mind)in some cases.However,I have always seen it as a necessity to arm oneself with a dictionary when attempting a Soyinka work.He makes no apologies for his use of hifaluting words; the imagery invoked at times is most beautiful and at others , it is lost on the reader as it is totally incomprehensible.In that respect, I do sympathise with a lot of readers.I too have struggled to grasp certain concepts, and to undertsand his use of certain terms.Having said this, my diction and imagination have become the better for it.This book is well written, but there is a lack of coherence in the chapters -one idea set forth in one area is so far removed from its predecessor or successor.Also, a lot of what he has written has been mentioned, allbeit, cursorily, in his other works-The Man Died, Ibadan:The Penkelemes Years.Did he really need to rehash the same things? Maybe and maybe not. A lot of people who are not too familiar with the development of Nigeria may not readily appreciate the social dynamics and certain characters mentioned in the book. I guess I have had the (dis)honour of having lived in some of the turbulent times and am familiar with a lot of the villains as told through Soyinka's eyes.I may have been a child in the eighties, but felt the brunt of the Buhari-Idiagbon regime, the corruption of the Babangida era, and the tyranny of Sani Abacha.I could readily identify with what the author what saying.Perhaps that is why some others may find it difficult to appreciate that part of a country's history;the linguistic sophistication does not help matters either.There were passages of sheer beauty, and there you see Soyinka excel in his use of vocabulary.Compared to his other works, I found I did not have to consult my dictionary as often.I suspect it is an improvement in my diction and not the author becoming soft.Overall, I think if one were to take up the challenge of reading the book there is some reward; it may be in learning new words, grasping new concepts and ways of presenting ideas. More importantly, others who have never been to, or been exposed to, Nigeria, will get to know its beauty,its people, the decimation and ruination of its collective psyche by past leaders, and how the inchoate democracy is striving to reclaim that lost glory.

I expected a master piece from a mastermind in You Must Set Forth at Dawn, and I was not disappointed. Indeed, I got value for the money and time I spent on this engaging memoir by Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka.The author has been one of the prominent actors in the political and socio-economic journey of Nigeria. He was a leading player in the western Nigeria uprising of 1964-65 in which he hijacked a radio station in Ibadan. He was active in the Nigerian civil war, for which he was imprisoned. And he was a thorn in the flesh of several military and democratic rulers in Nigeria.However, the book is not only about Soyinka's political battles and rascality particularly in Nigeria and Africa, but also about his core beliefs, such as justice, freedom, honor, and merit. And he is passionate about true friendship, as illustrated by his profuse dedication and homage to a late friend, Olufemi Babington Johnson (OBJ).Soyinka is intellectually mischievous and intelligently deviant. The book is filled with riveting episodes and anecdotes about his student days in England; acquaintance with literary giants, including British philosopher Bertrand Russell; falling in love with a dancer in Havana, Cuba; clandestine diplomatic shuttles around the world; dinners with world leaders in many countries, including with Nelson Mandela and Francois Mitterrand in Paris; an encounter with President Bill Clinton; and a quiet lunch in Israel with Shimon Peres, when he was no longer Israeli Prime Minister.However, as I read the book, these words continue to ring in my head: Whose spy is Wole Soyinka? Which foreign governments are his paymasters? His connection with security agents is mystifying. Often, he is ahead of people who are after his life, thanks to his informants in government and security agencies. Sometimes, he is so comfortable strolling on the streets of major world capitals, and at other times, he is undercover because members of a roving death squad are after him all over Europe and America.How did Soyinka know of a secret telephone in the wardrobe of Olusegun Obasanjo, then Officer Commanding Western Zone of the Nigerian Army in the 1960s? Obasanjo, who later became Nigeria's military head of state, and a democratic president, never knew the telephone existed in his own bedroom until Soyinka called him on the telephone box. That shows the level of Soyinka's influence even in the military intelligence corps.But as I immersed myself in the book and followed some daring sagas and daredevil acts by the author, the answer unfurled. Soyinka is nobody's `spook.'Whether he is on a fact-finding and exploratory visit to Bekuta, a slave settlement in Jamaica inhabited by descendants of the Egbas who might have migrated from Abeokuta in Ogun State, western part of Nigeria; or in Bahia, Brazil to retrieve a stolen artifact; Soyinka exhibited a kamikaze mind-set difficult to comprehend superficially. But as I reflected deeply, I understood that he follows and holds tenaciously to any cause he truly cherishes. I call that, passion.My best chapter in the book is, Olori-Kunkun and Ori-Olokun. The chapter is vintage Soyinka. For me, this encapsulates his nature. Ori-Olokun is a "long-lost" bronze head of a principal Yoruba deity stolen from a courtyard in Ife, the cradle of Yoruba civilization. Soyinka traced the relic to Bahia in Brazil, with the intention of stealing it from the home of a private art collector and returning it to its due place in Africa. But a surprise awaited him.The book has vivid plots, characters and dialogues. And I wonder if Soyinka wrote in a diary many of the events and people he described profoundly in the book. For me, African experiences richly articulated, mixed with intrigue and gut-wrenching story lines make my day and keep me on the edge of my seat as it were. I had no idea how politically involved Wole is and the position he's in to make immediate contribution to Nigeria and Africa for peace, democracy, human rights and cultural preservation. I hope that this generation fully utilizes this cultural, historical, literary and political icon to preserve African integrity for future generations.

Enjoyed every bit of it. It was very instructional in the history of Nigeria under military dictatorship. However, the writer sometimes got carried away with his poetic self by diving into several paragraphs of word play before coming back to the meat of the book..... The story.

We have needed a book like this for a long time. Covers all the physics used in motorsports and breaks it down for those without a PhD. However, the math is there for those of you who want to actually apply the lessons to your own hot rod.Congratulations Randy! You did a fine job balancing the needs of many on a subject few really ever master.If you are modifying a car for higher performance, you owe it to yourself to get this book. There is definitely something in it for you! Recommended!

A unique book and well written. The author is well versed in physics and how to apply it to cars and racing. Typical physics books are heavy on theory and light on applications. This book is the opposite. It is written to explain and apply physics principles for people interested in cars and racing but have not had college physics. For those with college physics, it is still a good read and informative. The author is very insightful and has some very clever ways of looking at things.

This is an excellent book. It is difficult and takes effort to read and apply the concepts. I am a Ph.D. in history, who has not had physics since high school. Using the things I know about engines and general mechanics, I have been able to work my way through the first two chapters. I will continue to learn from this fascinating contribution. J. A. I studied art history in college and I'm a fan of tarot/oracle decks (mainly for the art and symbolism- I love all the new indie decks...) so I couldn't resist picking up the Art Oracles. I wan't disappointed- these are fascinating and so interesting! They don't follow any traditional tarot/oracle system, but if you know enough about tarot you can kind of make some connections. The artwork is quirky and interesting (not beautiful, but compelling) and includes not only an image of the person the card depicts but also a few symbols and images pertaining to their work- so you can actually use these cards if you read intuitively. The deck also comes with a little white book with information on each of the artists. Each card has three little blurbs on it- pithy insights on how to approach work, life, and creativity in the spirit of the artist depicted. One thing I liked about this deck was that it featured a few artists I was not aware of, so it became like a little research project to figure out what the saying on the car might be referring to. So it definitely inspired me!I can't recommend these enough- they are clever and fun, as well as actually being very insightful.

SO cool! Perfect for that person who has that niche mixture of both a love for art history and energy work and divination practices. This is not a practical deck for everyone, but for the person it resonates with it is perfect. For me I feel like the personality of the artist really informs the message, so the reading made sense to me. I think it may be tough to read for others, but who knows until I try. Women are represented, hallelujah for that. As far as the cards themselves they are really, really nice. The cardstock is smooth and kind of matte finished so they shuffle beautifully and it doesn't look like they'll weather fast. The art represented is great and funny at times, perfect representations of the personas behind the creations. The box is gorgeous, though mine was a little dented on the bottom. I decided to keep it anyway since the cards were fine, but I think this product could benefit from shrink wrap or something as only the cards are wrapped and the box lid is white. The booklet is brief but helpful as it gives blurbs of the artists lives. Less a meaning guide for the cards. Definitely for type b people who use oracles with intuition more so than referencing the booklets. All in all a great price for a deck that fits right into my collection.

I am a professional reader, and this deck won’t be for everybody. It comes with a small book, but if you aren’t on point with your intuition you will have a hard time doing readings with this deck.Having said that, I find that knowledge about individual artists portrayed on the cards provides super spot on readings. If the provided book isn’t enough for you, reasearch the artists a little more.The only let down for me with this deck is that out of fifty total cards there are only fourteen artists who identify as women. I was very much hoping for equal representation in this area.The reason I purchased this deck is that it is being utilized in a group challenge that I am participating in. I loved the cards pulled so far, but had I known the deck was three quarters male artists I probably wouldn’t have purchased it.

I just wish there was a guide for layouts or like more specific instructions on how to use them. I mean of course if you are looking at these you are probably into reading oracles and tarot anyways but that one extra thing would have been nice.These are very nicely done and the artwork is super cool. It would be a great gift for that weird mystic art-history major (aka me) if you are able to resist the urge to open them and use them for yourself. In that case I recommend you just order two decks right now, because you are going to want to keep one.

High quality cards, lovely box, great artwork...but no accompanying guidebook to assist with interpretation. I would've loved to keep these for the exquisite craftsmanship alone, but there were only a few I understood. Even an online explanation or app would be great. It's a regretful return.

I have a hard time using this deck for detailed readings. In the mornings I get one card and have a general idea of how my day will play out. The cards are quirky and all around positive. The booklet describes the lives of the artists in a humorous manner.

Love it! Saw it and had to have it. Great novelty gift for an art lover or aficionado. Beautifully drawn cards. Great to bring out during a party for a bit of fun!

I absolutely enjoy the messages and guidance this deck provides. I use them almost daily, as it always brings about some humor into some very tough life advice at times.
