This little guidebook is exactly what I wanted it to be--an introduction to the history of Egypt and especially a window into the culture of modern Egypt. It will help me understand how to be a non-insulting visitor to the country in my upcoming trip. Really practical advice about how to interact with the people and what to expect. Terrific. I'll look for Culture Smart guides to every foreign country I ever visit! Quick and concise!
This book is very handy for the price, presenting interesting information on the culture of Egyptians. I have been to Egypt 3 times and will be returning again soon. I find this book to be reflective of what you can encounter in Egypt and please have an open, informed mind before you arrive there.The book is broken into chapters:1 - Land and People2 - Values and Attitudes3 - Customs and Traditions4 - Making Friends5 - Private and Family Life6 - Timeout7 - Travel, Health, and Safety8 - Business Briefing9 - CommunicatingAlthough a small, relatively brief book, I would recommend this to anyone visiting Egypt. It will make you aware of how things are there.I would also highly recommend Culture Shock: Egypt by Susan L. Wilson, which has even more dept and aspects covered. It was that book that I read before I went to Egypt the first time and that really helped me to open a window of the culture there.
While necessarily focused on generalizations, this is quite a useful little book for getting a grip on the basics of what to expect culturally in Egypt. As an international school teacher who will be working in Egypt soon, it gave me a few ideas on how to best approach getting a grip on Egyptian culture and not offending my future hosts. The political information, however, is already out of date with the military retaking the government.
Well worth the time to read. Provides good rules of thumb for living, traveling a/o visiting Egypt. Short and concise points and outline of the material facilitate its use as a reference as well.
I bought this mostly because I married an Egyptian man less than a year ago. I wanted to understand his culture better. I have to say, the book was a help. Often notice certain behaviors he has that I read about in the book, like being superstitious about certain things. The author did a good job introducing Egyptian culture.
Less information than I could have found with 5 minutes of websurfing. This book is ertainly not worth wasting money on.
I was pleased with this book. I purchased it for a great-granddaughter who asked for a book on Egypt as they were studying the country and the culture and customs in 2nd grade. I was concerned that the book would be too advanced but she seems to enjoy reading and learning from it.
Great book - would definitely recommend - lots of good info, educational!
