This book is simply an amazing work of art. There is no text. What makes it important to me is that this was the book that my mother used to teach me the story of Jesus when I was a child of five or six -- many, many years ago. It was originally published in 1930, and though I have no verification for this, it is quite possible that the artist James Reid could have been at the Art Institute of Chicago at the same time my parents, Ted and Lee Clarke Schuyler, were students there. Lee was always fascinated with print making, and we have numerous etchings by her, some done in the 1930's and some in the 1990's. Anyone interested in seeing examples can visit our website, [...].In any event, a copy of this book has been in our family library for many years, but when I recently tried to find it, I was unable to unearth it. So, on a whim, I went to Amazon, and behold -- there it was, in the original edition as well, apparently, as a more recent paper-back reprint. I was, and am, ecstatic. If anything was needed to convince me that Amazon is a marvelous resource, this was it.I strongly encourage anyone who is interested in exceptionally beautifully done graphic art, as well as a dynamic presentation of the Gospel story that follows the admonition of St. Francis: "Preach the Gospel; if necessary, use words!" (in this case, words aren't necessary) should investigate this book, perhaps in one of the more recent printings.
These woodcuts by James Reid are very striking. Their intensity is evocative, shocking the observer into new contemplations of the scenes depicted.
I'm very Grateful to Dover Publications for their brilliant job reprinting such important works of art! I've purchased them all and remain vigilant for the next title, like Lynd Ward's/Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. To Dover Publications, David A. Berona, Firefly Press, and everyone involved with publishing these great artists, and making these books available at such great prices, I extend an enormous "Thank You!".
This is a reprint in paperback form of a wonderful graphic book that was a valuable part of my own early childhood religious education. I first purchased a used copy of the hardback book because frankly I wasn't sure that the paperback would be what I remembered, but in order to share with a friend, I decided to "take the risk". I am delighted that the new edition is faithful to the original. This book deserves to be back in circulation.
