The book on Japan is a real rip off. It consist of just a few pages. Not worth the inflated price.

Excellent book for the money. Good overview of the Country.

The book had good info about the country, but only 30 pages does not give as much detail as I was hoping for!

China the Culture is a beautiful book with very nice photos. It gives a concise review of each aspect of China's culture, including its religion, food, arts, symbols, horoscope, festivals and traditions. It also includes gamse and hobbies. It is clear and easy to understand, logical, and provides enough historical information, including the Cultural Revolution and how it affected the cultural development during that time period, and the resurgence of Chinese culture. It develops each individual subheading in one or two paragraphs, but gives enough information, including tieing in Chinese religious beliefs or political climate. A very good introduction to Chinese culture. It is good for the grade school or junior high school classroom and can also be used for research in high school or for those new to Chinese culture.

A beautiful introduction to the landscapes of China. Brimming with photographs, the reader gets a tour through the different topographies of this enormous country. Information is given in short paragraphs with bold headings. The text is very easy and accessable. The author addresses topics of politics, food and the multiculural nature of China. An informative and enjoyable read for adults and a great survey for young readers.

Climate Change Science and Policy

Review

"Climate Change Science and Policy is the first book to successfully combine a discussion of the current state of climate science with ideas for climate mitigation in a comprehensive, yet surprisingly readable, collection of papers by authors working in both the physical and social sciences....This book presents the information needed to understand the myriad issues that define this effort...Highly recommended." (CHOICE)"This book's audience, in my view is a broad one: [all] who have the appetite and capacity for mastering the level of technical detail needed to understand—really understand—what global climate disruption is, where it is headed, what can be done, and how. No other book that I'm aware of offers this one's combination, for these purposes, of comprehensiveness, authoritativeness, currency, and readability . . . The intellectual terrain it covers is vast and sometimes demanding, but it will repay the efforts of all those able and willing to traverse it. May many do so." (John P. Holdren Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology)

Climate scientist Stephen H. Schneider (who died in July, 2010) here organizes 49 essays from noted experts to explore the state-of-our-knowledge of "global climatic disruption" and potential related policy initiatives. The essays are scholarly and, in some cases, quite technical, with charts, maps, and detailed sourcing. There are five main sections. "Impacts of Climate Change" ranges over extinction, ecosystems, water, hurricanes, wildfires, forests of Amazonia, crop production and food security, human health, and unique and valued places. "Policy Analysis" looks at economic impacts, assessment modeling, risk perceptions, political feasibility, carbon taxes/trading/offsets, and the economic cost of reducing COs emissions. "International Considerations" include treaties, EU climate policy, population, inequities and imbalances, ethics and rights, developing countries, the Clean Development Mechanism, and climate change and policy in China, India and Australia. There is a large section (9 essays) on the United States, including an interesting look at California's approach to combating climate change and at the role of media and public education in shaping policy. The fifth section, "Mitigation Options to Reduce Carbon Emissions", discusses renewable energy, hydrogen and nuclear energy, coal capture and storage, "avoided deforestation" policy for tropical forests, and the pros and cons of engineering the climate. The information presented here, current to late 2009, is quite alarming, even for someone who has been following climate change for some years. I guess someone has to make an effort to pull things together and hope to change the future, but the more I read in this field, the less hope I have that we as a species can cooperate in time and to the extent necessary to avoid changes for which we aren't prepared and wouldn't want if they were to happen today. In addition to the fact that the many, many consequences of climate change are endlessly layered and interconnected, they are also global, the scope of which most people don't fathom. We aren't talking about simple temperature warming, but massive changes in food production and water availability, location of growing seasons, food chain extinctions, and unprecedented illness and death from starvation, lack of drinking water, and political unrest as huge populations can no longer survive within their countries' borders. It doesn't help that industrial countries have the most to lose in lifestyle but the least in safety, at least for the next few decades. It is also possible that some wealthier countries will see short-term benefits from climate change, which will add to the unwillingness to alter our ways. However, the lag time in climate change is several human lifetimes, and it is too easy to indulge our species' short attention span and need to fulfill immediate wants. Add to that the political improbability of international trust and cooperation for what is needed to stop catastrophe, and the future seems quite bleak. While this book is difficult for the non-specialist to read, it is full of data and the scientific proofs rarely found in more popular books on the topic. This is the book to read to find out exactly why most scientists are extremely concerned and some terrified by what we've set in motion. Most of the writers make an attempt to just present the facts without sounding an alarm, and the effect is perhaps more disturbing: the bald facts lay out a future we really, really don't want but seem incapable of fully grasping. And therein may lie our fate.

Great condition

As a project management instructor and course developer at a state university, a project management keynote speaker, and someone who has been training project managers for nearly two decades, I highly recommend this book. I have also helped hundreds to pass their PMP exams (including training PMI employees) and although some folks claim they passed without this, I firmly believe that the PMBOK is a must-have.I have owned every edition of the PMBOK and I can tell you that it's gotten better with age. Let's face it, the material isn't the most exciting but at least it's much more readable than ever. Processes are more refined (some may remember core vs. facilitating processes in older versions) and are titled more consistently (used to have some start with verbs and others with nouns), descriptions of inputs/tools & techniques/outputs are clearer, and illustrations are less confusing. That said, the book still only covers the "whats". If you actually want to know "how" to execute some of these processes, you will need another resource like Project Management: A Systems Approach to Planning, Scheduling, and Controlling. For those who have seen some of the PMBOK's poor ratings in reviews of previous versions, you have to understand that this is a high-level guide, not an elaborate text or a mystery novel. As a result, do not expect to be a project management guru at the end or be entertained with creative irony.Anyway, since many of you are looking at this because you want to take the PMP exam, here is some advice:- Although you may be able to obtain a soft copy of this book by being a PMI member, I recommend having a physical copy. In all my years of schooling, I've never even used a highlighter but I did for the PMBOK when I was studying for this exam over a decade ago. It turns out that almost everything was worth highlighting but it forced me to read each line thoroughly.- You will need another book since many exam concepts aren't even covered in the PMBOK. I personally like PMP Exam Prep, Seventh Edition: Rita's Course in a Book for Passing the PMP Exam or CAPM/PMP Project Management Certification All-in-One Exam Guide with CD-ROM, Second Edition. You do not even need the latest editions. Trust me, the general concepts will be the same. For instance, earned value lessons in Rita's 1st edition from yesteryear will be the same as those in 7th or 8th editions. SPI will always be EV/PV.- When submitting project experience on the application, you can submit work even if your title was not Project Manager. If you worked on projects and have played a lead role, it may count so submit it. The key point is that you should be submitting project leadership activities. You still need 4500 hours of project experience if you have a bachelors or 7500 hours without a bachelors. Also, always submit more than those thresholds since some activities may be not be accepted.- Do not buy flash cards; instead, make your own. Get a stack of index cards and start writing terms/concepts on one side with definitions/formulas/descriptions on the back side.Hope this helps. Best of luck to everyone!***Update (Sep 2013)***New editions of the books I linked to above were released:- PMP Exam Prep, Eighth Edition: Rita's Course in a Book for Passing the PMP Exam- CAPM/PMP Project Management Certification All-In-One Exam Guide, Third Edition

I gave this book 5 stars NOT because I loved it, but because in my opinion you must read this book, at least 3 times through (I read it 3 times through) before taking the exam. Please realize, you will be tested ONLY on the content of THIS BOOK. So, go ahead and buy another book on studying for the PMP exam, but if that book covers any topic(s) that are NOT in THIS BOOK, you are learning content that is irrelevant for this exam. That's what I discovered anyway. I bought Joseph Phillips study guide, and although it was helpful, there were many terms and content items NOT in the PMBOK guide, and therefore I did not get any questions on the real exam related to those terms/topics. For example, Joe Phillips covers organization theories like Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, and there were no questions like this on the real exam (and it's NOT in PMBOK Guide). Also, I took 5 practice exams from 3 different sources (one was from the Joseph Phillips CD) which turned out to give me false confidence because the real exam was a LOT harder. I passed the exam yesterday after studying for over a year (not continuous). I think you'd have to study for 3-4 months straight if this material is new to you. So what do you need to study? First, you must MEMORIZE all the terms and concepts. That is hard if your memory is not great like mine. Second, you must MEMORIZE the PROCESSES and general FLOW of events. Understand the 47 processes and what events occur in each process--and what the major ITTOs are in each process. I recommend memorizing the 47 processes and being able to write them down in the chart before you take the exam. Memorize all the formulas. Know your contract types--I was surprised by how many Procurement questions there were. I cannot over emphasize that the exam was one of the hardest I've taken. According to the staff at the Sylvan Testing Center near me, where I took the exam, at least half the people who take it there fail. Good luck.

This outdated attempt to control copying makes it aggravating to read. It is like your eyes are out of focus and you can't do anything about it.There is currently no disclosure in the product description on Amazon that this is the case. I bought this version (rather than the current 6th-edition) because of the myriad complaints regarding the misplaced anti-copy printing on the 6th-edition. Apparently they decided to do the same with this 5th-edition as well. I am returning the book.I also test scanned a page and was easily able to remove the background watermark which is purportedly there to prevent copying. So it effectively does nothing to prevent a person from copying the pages at will. It DOES however, punish the vast majority of purchasers who are legitimate readers of the book.PMI seems like a good organization for organizing and managing the PMBOK. However, the decision to print on ineffective anti-copy paper is asinine. Modern technology and the easiest matter of seconds renders this myopic attempt completely ineffective. You'd think they would test this before dispensing a book that primarily delivers headaches, eye-strain, and frustration instead of valuable content.I am giving two stars rather than one because the book does contain valuable content. You just can't get to it very easily and for any length of time unless you enjoy self-torture.

The MOST difficult Exam I have ever taken! If you have no history in Project Management, take the CAPM Exam first.Read this MANUAL three times first, then read other PMI books on PMP e.g. Risk, Ethics, Business Calcs etc. Then, take a class, (you need required CE's anyway) twice a week for 6 weeks, then schedule the EXAM.My guess is 6 months.Do you have a Bachelor's degree, but not a Master's?Would you like to change careers but don't know how? Here is the answer! You don't have to spend 5 years at College and $60,000 on an MBA!And....would you like to make $125,000/year?
